Motherboard advice?

Garak

Trying to get a build together for my brother, but I'm really stuck with the motherboard and honestly still the ram. Pretty sure I want to go 32GB for him, but not sure if 3200 or 3600. (If I went 3600 I may have to go 4 sticks because the prices of 2x16 just shot up 80 pounds. Some mobo options listed before, feel free to suggest others even if out of price range. I don't mind spending more if it's necessary.

12th gen intel is not worth it unless you are taking advantage of DDR5. If you are going DDR4, just get a Ryzen 5000 CPU.

Sorry I probably edited my post. Refresh plz. Build Specs Below.

What CPU are you pairing with the motherboard?

It is not necessary to get a Z690 motherboard if the CPU is not a -K or -KF (overclocking supported) SKU -- if you have no intention to overclock the CPU.

Also, what is the rest of the parts list?

GPU?

PSU?

Case/chassis?

CPU Cooler?

If OP WANTS to use Intel, let them... AMD fanboys/Intel "haterz" not required here.

EDIT:

2x 16GB 3600 CL16 kits are still reasonably priced, @Garak

Did you test boot it, before you built in into the case?

WHY NOT...?!

Try filtering the list on the left of the PC Part Picker a bit further... is WiFi required, what form factor, etc

Also - as @-rascal- asked - what are the rest of the parts for this build likely to be?

The build so far is looking like the followin

12600k

Dark Rock Pro 4.

6x ARCTIC P12 PWM PST RGB 0dB

Corsair 4000D

3060ti FE.

None of it is set in stone other than the Dark Rock Pro 4. It's my brother build he wants to go Intel.

The Ripjaws looked a decent price, but I think they might be too tall for the cooler. I guess £170 isn't completely terrible for the ballistix. I just hope it's dual rank.

WiFI a bonus, not required. ATX.

My only issue with z690 vs b660 is the pcie lanes. Is he likely to run in to any problems with the b660 having less pcie lanes?

This may help, if you haven't seen it already... 5:02 in.

I'm interested, but how long until these hit UK shores? He's nagging to get his build done

That's a pretty rough build you have going there.  I'm just curious as some others may be, but exactly what will this machine be doing once it is put together?  If he is just reading email, browsing the internet, and watching YouTube videos this is a tad bit on the overbuilt side of the fence.  But, if he is going to mine data using BOINC, then he should be at the top of the list.

Good Luck

For playing games at 1080p. What's rough about it?

By rough I meant overkill.  I figured with the  parts you are going to use that just mundane things as reading email, browsing the internet and watching YouTube videos would really not justify going with the high-end parts.

Are you (or your brother) going to do any overclocking CPU overclocking?

If not, you could go down to a non-K SKU, and a B660 or H670 motherboard, since all those still support DRAM / Memory overclocking.

As for the case, is it the "regular" 4000D, or the "4000D Airflow"?

You want the 'Airflow' version.

PCI-E lanes is not an issue; the PCI-E lanes comes from the CPU.

16 PCI-E lanes going to the top PCI-E slot (i.e. graphics card slot), and the an extra 4 lanes goes to storage (i.e. M.2 NVMe SSD).

Could have went b660, but they weren't any cheaper at the time of purchase in the UK. (and still aren't, to be fair)

Got the airflow version.

Ended up going down to 3200 speed ram because I got 2x16gb dual rank kit for £80. Hopefully there isn't much difference between it and 3600.

All parts ordered now just have to wait for be quiet! to send me the bracket to mount.
