Music Production Monitors or Headphones?

I've become more heavily involved in music production lately and using airpod pros and my cars stereo as monitors is leading to inconsistent mastering and soundstage design. I live with 4 other people so I'm conflicted as to use headphones for courtesy sake or if monitors can be turned down enough to still provide accurate sound while not vibrating the walls. I would much prefer not to use headphones so I may have to invest in sound dampening.

 

My budget is ~$1200

I use Logic Pro X on a MacBook Pro

I don't own any pre existing hardware like a DAC or receiver

Monitors definitely do not need to be turned to an extremely high volume to produce precise audio, for that budget you list you could easily purchase a decent set of monitors (say the Tannoy Reveal 802) as well as an Audio interface (UMC1820 or higher quality lower channel count interface depending on your production requirements) AND a decent set of studio headphones (ATH M40x, Beyerdynamic DT 770/990) which would still leave some budget left over (depending on price of interface) for microphones if you needed some.

What kind of music production are you doing? 
Do you need lots of mic channels?

I already use the ATH M50X's and a Blue Yeti mic in a booth but the M50X's aren't my favorite as they are a bit harsh for mids and highs compared to other headphones. But going off what you said that monitors don't need to be very loud to have precise audio I think I'll go that route and keep the M50Xs. As they are still nice for vocalists to use.

 

Most production I do is rap instrumentals/beats and deep house so I've only ever used 1 mic channel. I think support for 2 or 3 would be ideal for the future as I only use it for vocals because I use MIDI input for the instruments.

 

Also what are your thoughts on adding a subwoofer to the monitors? It seems essential but I'm not 100% sure. Thanks

Not essential by any means.

Using a UMC202HD will give you more than enough IO for running monitors and your M50s, also gives you two XLR inputs in case you ever want to record wit XLR / TRS

Monitors don't need to be turned to a high volume to be accurate. 1200 would be plenty to get some very nice quality monitors. I'd personally recommend either genelecs if you want strictly the most accurate option, or the focal shape twins if you want something high performance that is also a bit more enjoyable to listen to.

For $1200 you could get some very nice headphones such as the hifiman Arya, however the requirement for a good amp would eat into the budget so might make it a less ideal option. However would alleviate the concern about disturbing housemates

Honestly good headphones and a Class A DAC/Headphone amp can go a long way compared to what you're using now. (budget friendly choice: Audient ID4 also has a mic input)
- Making critical mix decisions on a macbook built in DAC is not going to translate well in other places and with those headphones will be even more of a challenge.

 

If you would rather go the studio monitor route - You might be able to find a used pair of Adams A7x or Genelec 8030's , and then DIY some sound treatment. Treatment will be crucial to getting good results on studio monitors IMO.  (Just the basics would do such as corner bass trap and stopping reflections off the walls parallel to your ears at mix position.)

- No need for a sub in an untreated room or else you're asking for more confusion and less translation to cars/stereos/etc.
