i7 8700k @5GHz vs i7 9700k @5Ghz

I would just keep the 8700K and save for something better.

AMD R7 5800X3D | Thermalright Aqua Elite 360, 3x TL-B12, 2x TL-K12
Asus Crosshair VIII Dark Hero | 32GB G.Skill Trident Z @ 3733C14
Zotac 4070 Ti Trinity OC @ 3045/1495 | WD SN850, SN850X
Seasonic Vertex GX-1000 | Fractal Torrent Compact, 2x TL-B14

If you own one of them, keep whichever one you own, it's not enough of an upgrade.

If you're gonna buy one of them and their the same price, the 9700k is the overall faster chip. If they aren't the same price, get whatever one is cheaper, there isn't that much of a performance delta between them and saving $20 is worth it to just go for the 8700k.

The 9700K is faster in almost all situations. The two do trade blows in rendering applications, like Blender, as sometimes the 12 threads on 6 cores is better than 8 threads on 8 cores, but in general, the 9700K is faster.

That said, the difference is not enough to make either an upgrade for the other.

5ghz 8700 vs 5ghz 9700k vs 5ghz 9900k vs 5ghz 10900k...

Differences aren't huge.

Coming from someone who upgraded from a 5ghz 8700k to a 5.1-5.3ghz 10900k and a 3080.....not worth it.

Get 12600/12700k and upgrade the whole platform. Or just wait for 13th gen.

I wish I did.
