You can, it just might not stick as well.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

If you really want to change the sticker, it will likely come off in tact. I removed all the stickers from all of my SSDs before placing them under the heatsinks on my motherboards. They all came off intact. With most labels / stickers, and little heat generally helps.

As already mentioned, you might get some push back from the manufacturer if you need warranty support as many of these stickers do say not to remove them. Depending on where you live this may or may not be legal anyways, so it may not matter.

Most of these SSDs (at least Gen 4 to my knowledge and some Gen 3) usually have a metallic sticker that actually helps spread the heat out. Removing it is ill-advised for a couple reasons including the fact it may/will void your warranty if you have trouble with the drive. I would also not recommend slapping that on the back of a drive unless you're 100% sure it's not going to make contact with the back of some SMD parts

Yes, some SSDs just have paper stickers, but those are mostly cheap, low quality drives. The vast majority have stickers that do double duty as heat spreaders, and those you should not remove, even if you combine it with a heatsink. The heat spreader serves a different and important purpose to a heatsink.

NAND flash works most efficiently when it's warm, but the controller generates heat that needs to be dissipated. The heat spreader serves to transfer the heat from the controller to the NAND flash chips, so they stay warm and toasty and the controller does not.

is there a way to put a heatsink on a motherboard which doesn't come with one?

yes, you can put one on the m.2 drive and then put it on your mobo like normal. you would have to check availability in your exact country, but as an example: https://www.amazon.com/ELUTENG-Heatsink-Double-Sided-Aluminum-Conductivity/dp/B07PS9S2DZ/ref=sr_1_19?crid=3EC9GK8JJ41AL&keywords=m.2+heatsink&qid=1640736534&s=industrial&sprefix=m.2+heatsink%2Cindustrial%2C82&sr=1-19
