James Webb Space Telescope Launch @ 12:20 UT Dec. 25th!

Launch starts 12:20 UT

 

After facing multiple delays, the moment is finally here. JWST is the biggest most advanced telescope to date and will observe the Universe at mid-infrared wavelengths from space using a 6.5 m diameter foldable mirror. Today it will embark on its journey on top of an Ariane V rocket to the L2 lagrange point at 1.5 million km from the Earth, where it will undergo a complex deployment sequence illustrated here:

 

Anyone else excited to see this thing finally go up?

I moved to Florida several years ago (9 miles from Kennedy Space Center), and it was supposed to launch then. I then moved around to 2 other states and ended up back in Florida, and now it launches (though not from here)! So bloody excited for this telescope to work. Can't wait to see the photos, as well as the science discoveries!

It'll still be an agonising few months seeing it deploy fully. Luckily the launch went perfect and solar panel deployment was a success. All those years of research positions based on "you'll work with JWST data!", now we can almost finally honestly say that 😛

I was able to watch the launch, and gosh the whole thing is so nerve-wracking, praying everything keeps going perfectly. Been looking forward to this for months, can't wait to see what we'll discover deep in the cosmos.

lol of course not. First of all that's way too high resolution (the cameras are like 1024x1024 and 2048x2048 pixels). First light will be at least a month away, that's when it'll be fully deployed. Then it'll start turning on and cooling down the instruments and commisioning observations will start.
