3080 12GB vs 3080 10GB gaming performance?

KnightElm
Go to solution Solved by jones177,

I think it matters but only at 4k and in most cases with RT on.

I have a 3080 so I did tests in scenarios that use more than 10gbs. Then I did the same with a budget 3080 ti so I could feel the difference. It felt like I went from an 8 core CPU to a 4 core, so not smooth. It was emersion breaking but nothing more.

Just now, KnightElm said:

Honestly Ultra vs High would not be a huge deal for me so I will stick to my 3080. Thanks for your help!

I could not get past 10gbs at 1440p with RT on so I only consider it a 4k with TR issue for now.

I also don't regret getting the 3080.

Playing games in my normal way it has been fine.

The card is not powerful enough to do 4k with RT on since frames are usually in the 40s and that does not change much with the 3080 tis.

This is an issue for next gen and hopefully they will have more vram by then.

With rumors of a 3080 12gb variant release on the horizon, how much difference in gaming would it make compared to the 3080 10gb?

I have removed a line in my original post because it seems to be a sore subject. My apologies.

I'm sorry if this is rude, but have you seen beggars asking for jam on their bread? Extra 2GB does not make noticeable difference to 99% of users, those that do might as well ignore the 3080 and buy the 3090 from the very beginning. Supply issue is the biggest factor today so I find asking this with this

If the GPU is the exact same and it really just has more memory, then it will be difficult to find a case where the 12GB version will outperform the 10 GB counterpart. The additional memory is much more useful for rendering tasks in blender or mining than anything gaming related.

I have a 3080ti in my system and I have barely ever seen the VRAM usage above 8GB when gaming in 1440p or in VR.

If you got the 3080 for msrp I would say you are already lucky and should probably just be thankful that you got it for that price. It's not like 12gb is a significant difference and who knows when and if the 12gb version will come out. Even if it does who knows if you can get it for msrp. I would stick with what you got. The 3080 10gb is a super good gpu and I don't see any reason to return it simply because there might be a marginally better version coming out.

That's very much understandable. I'm the type of person who wants to make sure that I'm always spending my money wisely. I bought this GPU expecting to keep it for as long as possible until it literally cannot run a game. For the 3080 12GB, if it's the same price as the 10GB version, and there is a noticeable difference in performance then to me it's worth it. And please note that I had been saving for a full year to get this card so of course it would sting a little bit when something better comes up just as I buy it. If not for practical reasons, I also had emotional reasons for asking this question. Knowing that the difference in performance is negligible puts my heart to ease.

I have seen some discussions on reddit regarding the performance when it comes to 4K that the 10GB might end up being a limitation.

Don't get it me wrong. I am very thankful to be able to get a GPU during these times. Please don't think I am ungrateful. But I did just purchase it and if a better gpu immedtialtely comes out for the same price then logically it would make sense to get it. Whether I actually am able to get it or not is a different concern.

There could be edge cases where that could Hit the Limit when you want to go for maximum eye candy but for most games it would just be enough to put texture detail on high instead of ultra and be under the 10 GB Limit with a marginal Costa in Image quality

Another dimension other than capacity alone is bandwidth. 12GB vs 10GB would have a wider bus, potentially increasing ram bandwidth, and improve performance that way even if 10GB is plenty. This assumes they don't drop the vram clocks.

I don't see why you should have had to just because some people want to be salty, you don't come across as in any way gloating.

But I'd stick with your choice, you got the best value / performance card of everything NVidia is currently offering. I doubt that'll change with the 12Gb version.

This is pure speculation, but if they release a 3080 with 12 GB of VRAM it could be the 3080 Super which might have more cuda cores compared to the standard 3080. So you would not just be getting more VRAM you might also be getting better overall performance as well. If you look at the gap between the 3080 and the 3080 Ti, the 3080 Super, if released, might slot in between there somewhere.

This is like buying a car. It's lost value as soon as your drive off the lot. And the next new one is always around the corner. I understand wanting to get a good card and have it last, and pay a fair price. But given that there will always be a new thing within 6 months or less of you committing to PC parts, you will never have the best (or best value) for long.

Does the 3080 do everything you need now, and will it hold its performance for a long time? Yes. Then don't overthink and overworry. You will be happy with it for years.

I just want to say that you all were right. I am definitely glad that I did not wait for the 12GB 3080. The price is absolutely ridiculous.

Did anyone really expect it to be reasonably priced though?

Considering I got my 3080 before a bit over a month after launch from MC prior to the price skyrocketing I count myself lucky having already used it for a good 14 months and mined 5 (which made it less than free).
