Pure gaming setup?

Quick question for you guys… I wanna do a dual pc setup at some point and I wanna start planning it now since I’m getting a new job soon with much better pay so I wanna piece it together over time… so I know what I wanna do for the workstation side since I’m a game developer but for the gaming side I’m confused I’m not sure weather to go with a Ryzen 9 5950X or a threadripper 3990X I wanna do an all out balls to the wall pc that will be good for a long time but the video I saw shows the 5950X doing slightly better than the TR in games but the guy also was running a 1080TI while doing the benchmarks so I’m not sure if the TR will be better or the Ryzen 9? But at the same time I’m really partial to a dual TR setup but which would actually be better you know? Thankyou in advance!!!

Most video games currently do not take advantage of high core count cpus. So cpus that have less cores that are faster will outrun cpus that have a larger amount of sliwer cores.

So yes using consumer grade gaming hardware would be better for a consumer grade task such as gaming.

Honestly if you want the best gaming CPU, that's currently the 12900k, not the 5950x. Threadripper will be out of the question for this since the clock speeds are lower and the architecture is last gen.

Building a PC over time is the completely wrong way to go about it. You'll pay far more for outdated components. Save up, wait until you have the money, then buy.

5950x over the older TR unless you need the lanes, if you are building new only for gaming, then 12600k or 12700k

From AMD, most of the time this is their fastest CPU in games. Other times its the 5900x.

That all being said, its a little misguided if you think the difference in games is going to be drastically different between even a 5600x and a 5950x.

If you're interested in purchasing a 5950x, you have a budget for a higher end GPU which usually leads to 1440 to 4K gaming. At those resolutions you are heavily GPU bound and the difference between those two chips is minimal at best.

In short, even a 5950x makes little sense for a "pure gaming setup".

Don't get that for gaming, you'll perform worse than a proper mainstream CPU.

Well it may be "fastest", whether it is "best" it is debatable. Some would mention very hight energy consumption as a drawback (this implies better cooling, likely noisier). And there is a question if software supports this efficiency/performance cores. Win 11 required, and it seems Win 11 Pro is the way to go, it one opt to maintain some remnants of control over his own computer. And as mentioned, above certain point what matters foremost is GPU, unless we discuss hardcore world simulation games.
