This is what the opening days of a large scale non-nuclear conflict will be.  A lot of missiles, all involved parties will start with their ASATS, trying to knock out their rival's navigation satellites to deny them easy guidance.  There's a threshold where there will be enough debris up there that it'll start taking out other satellites in a cascade and space will be denied to us for years, even decades.

We're not far off that now. There's an insane amount of space debris floating around up there. That's why it takes so long for any kind of launch to happen.

If someone figured out an easy way to retrieve all the abandoned trash circling the earth in an economic way, they'd be super rich.

 

It's also why I don't believe alien life wants to visit earth any time soon. We're like the white trash neighbours that have half a dozen old fridges in their front yard, beside the 70's piss stained futon.
