The server Linus has is probably overkill for your home use.

He always tends to use overkill hardware so probably going with what he gets isn't the best idea.

What is it that you want the server to be able to do?

I am getting pretty fucking sick and tired of the "watch something else" responses. It's such a cop out answer because you could say that about basically anything, and it doesn't address the actual complaints. People use it as some kind of card they pull when they can't actually respond to the criticism raised but they still feel like they need to defend some company/person. If you don't like this thread then stop reading it. See how stupid it is? It's basically like telling someone "shut the fuck up". It's not a clever responsive, it doesn't address anything said, and it is rude.

MKBHD is but an Apple propagandist and fanboy. Take his videos with a grain of salt, especially about anything Apple. In his video titled "I Visited Apple's Secret iPhone Testing Labs!", he has shown that he makes no effort to fact check Apple's claims, and takes it at face value. I do not believe he can be trusted as an Reviewer/Influencer.

If i search it correctly, his "home server" which he have said is super overkill for his own usage should be Gigabyte R262, which can retail for up to 5 grand USD. You should consider running just straight basic render PC with ECC or a used 4U supermicro server based on Xeon V3/V4.

-> Moved to Servers and NAS

It changes all the time but yes the latest "going to be my server" is >15K rackmounted industrial Epyc-based hardware with the SSDs, although it seems the plan changed again.

Hij heeft altijd de neiging om overdreven hardware te gebruiken, dus waarschijnlijk is het niet het beste idee om te kiezen voor wat hij krijgt.

Wat wil je dat de server kan doen?

i am trying to build a server that everyone in the house can use for storage. we use allot of data and all of our computers are always full. we also wanna make sure that we can  acces eachotters datta. and to centralise al this data i thought a server might be fitting since we are using it with four people at once 12 hours a day.

Basically any home nas can do this.

Do you want diy or prebuilt? Id probably just get something like a synology here.

I wouldn't copy linus, do what works the best for you here.

im currently looking into one of dells prebuild moddels so that when we decide to finally pull the trigger on an office and hire more people. that we can also use it for that

synology 4 or 6 Bay NAS would best be use for office use, just fill them up with ironwolf hdd...

when its storage is around 80% full, u can buy DX expansion series

Keep in mind that Linus' 2U server is 2.5" drives. The limitation fo that is either:

a) large SSD storage is really expensive or;

b) 2.5" hard drives are limited in capacity and are less reliable than 3.5" drives on average.

I'd recommend since its just for home storage, you look into an off the shelf nas. Even a 4 bay Synology could happily have 4 x 8TB in a RAID5 and give you 24TB of usable space with 1 disk failure. Or 4 x 12TB in a RAID6 could give you 24TB with 2 disk failure.

Depending on your requirement they do larger units such as their 8 bay which are really popular, and they also do PCIe addin's like nvme caching and 10gbit nic's for their units.
