GPU (2070) not being fully utilized; laggy gameplay.. Cities:Skylines

Stormseeker9

Hi,

Started playing C:S today for the first time in a long time, and noticed that my GPU fans do not spin, GPU temp is stable around 59C, and utilization rate according to TM is around 25%. Does not seem to boost either,

Something definitely feels off, as from remembrance, the fans used to spin when playing this game. Gameplay itself feels very laggy, slow, and it starts from the moment I start a new city.

Furthermore, the GPU if I use it or not always hovers around 59C (continiously basically) --> Not sure if this is an issue, opened a thread about this last year sometime, but couldn't figure it out at that time..

running around 12-17FPS

Attached a screenshot showing stats top left corner, and TM open.

Anyone know what could be wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated !

Are your drivers up to date?

In the game screenshotted, are you sure that doesn't have capped FPS?

It used to work fine ever since I had it. This is a new issue. Also not understanding why my gpu is hardly being utilised.

Drivers up to date, G sync enabled, 144hz. Afaik no fps limiter enabled.

The normal frame rate is 12-17 fps, but zoomed out and just switched district settings so all buildings gone.

I jumped from the same CPU to the 5600x and my 3060 gained around 30% more performance in most titles due to bottlenecking.

If with your CPU C S was working at much better FPS prior? Then yeah I admit that's an issue.

Did you recently update the GPU driver?

Revert to the last known driver you used.

Try turning G-Sync off. It can make weird things happen.

Not as far as I know. G sync is enabled from Nvidia control panel, windows set to 144hz. In the C:S setting a the ‘v-sync’ option is every blank v second option enabled

Thank you all for your help.

seem to have fixed the FPS issue by installing a mod from the workshop + switching V-sync option off.

Now getting 55-60 fps and running smooth!

the GPU is a little more utilised 39%, however, continuous to hover around 57-59C and remains there 24/7. (Separate issue, will open another thread).

Thats just Cities Skylines. That game depends more on the CPU than anything. To me those numbers seem normal for Cities Skylines and unless your utilization is low in other titles two I don't see a problem.

With 24/7 do you mean even outside of games?

Yes I do. Actually 24/7 ranging between 57-59c at all times. Been like they for over a year.

( in the meantime my save file is corrupt so I lost my current city for this moment 🥲)

Good to hear that you got it sorted out.   What is the mod btw?  Might be useful in the future.

I have a much older system that ran it "okay", playable but bad frame drops in certain situations.

But somewhere around mid-2019,  there was some update to the game and it became unplayable.  Happens 2-3 times every minute where extreme slowdown, stutter/slideshow, for 10+ seconds.  Trying to scroll across the map was almost impossible.

Everything else I have ran the same as before,  so it was specific to Cities:S,  and haven't had a fun city builder to play...  Got desperate for anything,  I'll picked up Caesar 4 last year.  It is alright/worthwhile,  but nothing like the era, style, mechanics, etc, transportation management.., that I miss.

No.. well. I did about a year ago and couldn’t get it solved and kind of forgot about it until recent…

tried things like  reseating, updating drivers, custom fan curve etc.

WEll buddy, that's C:S for you now. It's basically a CPU torture test. I think it was right at that time where they brought some major shader changes and all of a sudden half of the players had to upgrade. The thing this game needs the most is fast CPU, then fast RAM (and a lot of it) and finally fast storage.
