Hi everyone - I've finally starting purchasing components for a new build (my first, currently using a Dell XPS 8900 (i7-6700k / NVidia GTX 745, so the upgrade will be noticeable - I hope anyway).

I've decided on pretty much everything:

Ryzen 7 5800x

3060 ti (maybe 3070 depending on what I can ultimately get my hands on)

G.Skill Ripjaws (2x16) 3600 CL16 RAM (purchased - in hand)

AORUS Elite V2 mobo (purchased - in hand)

Crucial P5 Plus (M.2 NVMe 4.0 boot) / P5 (M.2 NVMe 3.0 secondary - purchased - in hand)

Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360

Fractal Meshify 2 ATX

PC Partpicker estimated wattage: 439.  This puts me prob at a 750W PSU I'm guessing?

Budget is, as you can guess, mid-to-high range, but I'm trying to save money where I can.  I'm looking for sales, and decided on some parts where I won't see material differences vs their more expensive peers.  For example the Ripjaws instead of the Neo RAM, Crucial vs Samsung storage, B550 mobo instead of X570 etc).

I had penciled in a Corsair RMx 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply, but this is like $170.  I'm happy to save some money if I can find a comparable PSU.  Any recommendations welcome - thanks in advance!

I mean if you really want to save money. You can just put a new psu in the xps and put the new card in there. Will still be a massive upgrade.

Any way for the build:

Msi mpg or revolution d.f. are better psu's and usually A LOT cheaper. Get the 750w version if you go for a 3070 650w is fine with a 3060ti.

The RM750x is a great PSU, but it shouldn't cost 170. How much are the 650w and 850w versions of it? What country (need to know so I can look up a good one)

Hey  - thanks for the help - I'm in the US.  The price is coming from PC Partpicker / Amazon

RMx PSU's are quite nice. (I like the fan off function)

But i did buy mine 3 years ago 750W version for about 130$

So you might want to find a cheaper one of those.

When i ask for more specs, don't expect me to know the answer!

Thanks.  I do have some money to spend on a new machine, so I'm comfortable spending ~$2k-2500, but just done want to spend for the sake of spending where I can chip away at the final price tag.

I'll take a look at the ones you recommended, appreciate it.

I recommend the RM750x 2018 or Be Quiet! Straight Power 11. You linked the old version, which is expensive because it's hard to find. MSI MPG A-GF is also good, but these two are better if it's in your budget. I have an RM650x 2018 myself and never had any issues, it's really quiet too. RMx PSU's are often on sale too

Don't chip on PSU tho it gives your whole system juice to run

If you wand high tier good PSU would reccomend XPG Core Reactor 850w https://www.e-katalog.ru/m1_compare.php?items_=1905719%2C767178%2C1521969%2C1134823%2C1229205%2C708783&huid_=5316ba62

Futureproof your builds and try not to fry anything

Thanks - I replaced the RMx with the MSI based on another response, but what do you mean by 'better'?  What am I getting for the extra money if they are all in the A rated list?

Honest question - I'm happy to spend a bit more, just want to understand what 'better' means. the RMx for $135 vs the $85 MSI is a decent bump in price, curious as to what that gets me if you happen to know.

Better can mean:

  • More options like fan-off mode eco-mode etc.
  • It can mean more stable power
  • It can mean plainly more power
  • It can mean nicer cables with better plugs.
  • etc.

The RMx would probably last longer and be quieter. It could also be more stable, but you probably won't notice much about that anyway, maybe like 1 extra crash a year.

Cool, thanks.  Maybe I just wait until the RMx goes on sale then =)

Thanks, appreciate the feedback.

I'd be surprised if I get any PSU related crashes - I mean my Dell hasn't crashed in the many years I've had it, would be a bit concerning if a new build with (assuming) superior parts had that risk.

As mentioned, I think I'll just wait until the RMx goes on sale.  It's not like I will be able to get a GPU anytime soon. =)

The MPG looks to be a very good unit, its rated A in the psu tier list. The only issue is that its not been reviewed by the more well known reviewers. I could only find 1 review where they opened it up and did testing for ripple/transient response for the 850W unit. I'm considering the MPG or the cheaper Corsair RM myself.

Currently, these two are the best choice for the price.

The rest you don't need to consider 😛
