Hello, everybody!

I've been stuck on a thinking loop, and it would be nice if you could give me your opinion, because I'm not too knowledgeable about this.

I built my first PC this year, and my setup is almost finished, I only need to upgrade my monitor and GPU, once prices become more sensible. Currently, I own a 1080p HP 22er (it's actually my father's, but I've been using it for years) and my PC has a 1050 ti. I'm thinking of upgrading to a 27 inch 1440p monitor, I work with audio and music, so the extra size and resolution would be great for a DAW; and I also want to upgrade the graphics card to a 3060 ti, which I figure would be more than enough for what I play, mostly indie games (such as Hades, The Binding of Isaac or Don't Starve Together), and a few heavier ones (i.e. Doom 2016, some retro shooters and 3D games). Playing AAA games isn't a must for me, just a nice to have, plus I'd really like to try Quake II with RTX 馃槃, so I think a 3060 ti is enough for me!

So, do you reckon my current 1050 ti would be enough for playing my lighter games at 1440p? Or should I wait and purchase the monitor and GPU at the same time?

And another question, have you had any issues with pixel art or 2D games at 1440p? I understand some of these don't support that native resolution, but I don't know how to find out which of my games do, and which would have issues.

Thank you for reading! I'd love to read what you think, and learn from people more savvy in this subject...

P.S.: apologies if my english is poorly redacted

PC Gaming Wiki聽has a pretty comprehensive library of games and known compatibility issues with work-arounds. I'd look there for the games you're interested in.

If you'd benefit from the higher resolution and display size for your non-gaming stuff I'd say go for it. Non-demanding titles you'll probably be alright.

Be sure to QUOTE or TAG me in your reply so I see it!

Hey there! The 1050Ti is actually quite a capable card, I used to play AAA games on a stock 1050 with some lower settings and overall mindfulness of system resources and was just fine. Those games on a decent CPU with good cooling and at least 8GB of RAM should be completely fine at 1440p 60fps. If you still want a little more headroom, which I can completely understand, a cheaper and more fitting alternative would be a 1660Ti/1660 Super, or even a used 1070.

You gotta understand how fucked the market is right now on GPUs, buying cards new just really isn't viable. I'll link below the 1660 skews I mentioned, but even those MSRP at 600 DOLLARS right now, like double I paid for mine. While you have to be careful, buying used on eBay and other used sites is a fantastic way to buy a GPU for a not shit price right now, I did some looking for y' and found a couple 1070's from 300-400 USD which is a much better deal than the聽1660's new.

(Also since we're literally on his聽forum, I'm gonna assume you saw Linus' vid about mining GPUs and their 'wearing down over time'. It's just bullshit manufacturers say to throttle the used market that're聽fucking their sales margins. Before, I'd've recommended not going anywhere near card that've been mined, but if you can find a working $300 1070 that's been mined with, literally just buy it.)

And the cards I've been talking about would聽already be overkill, so聽you'll have no concerns with even playing AAA games at 1440p/60, without burning the unnecessary money on overkilling-the-overkill.

I could see the 3060Ti as being a viable option if what you're looking for is good, inexpensive ray tracing, or things like RTX voice and so forth, but beyond the specific features that require an RTX card, I just wouldn't go for it.

1070 (Used) - Not gonna send any links. I don't know where you live, so stuff that pops up on my eBay could be across the country from you. Just use your head and type "1070" into eBay to get relevant stuff for you

Hope that helped!
