OpenVPN working with VOIP

aparanoiduser

Hey!

I'm trying to use a VPN for VOIP services (because I'm extremely paranoid), and it kind of works. When I connect to my client, the audio plays fine for around 10 to 20 seconds, but after that the audio starts to stutter and I can't hear anything. Any solutions?

"A VPN" is "fast enough" for VOIP. OP's issue lies within their VPN configuration/connection.

That's what I was thinking, it should be fast enough - others have done it.

This is a fresh install of openvpn, nothing has been changed but me adding an user.

Gonna need more details chief. Start by posting details, what is the latency between your client and the server? How does your ovpn server configuration looks like, what is the connection transfer rate between server and the client (you can use iperf3 to test connection speed within the vpn, dont use fast.com or speedtest as its not what I am asking) What is this VOIP service?

Ping between my server is around 170ms (got it using ping within cmd).

Getting the transfer rate now

Discord is the VOIP service.

iperf3's connection times out - when running ping via cmd, around 170ms then times out and comes back to life a second later

Are you testing using your VPN IP ranges? Or trying to test using public IP? Also how are your clients are connecting to VPN? I have 240ms latency between my client and the server and discord voip does not have any of the issues you described here. What about your ovpn server configuration? What parameters did you use to set it up?

That's the problem. High latency isn't ideal, but packet loss is as that will cause jitter and audio drop-out.
