Going back down to 1440p - recommendations?

nicolas2465

So I had bought a 4k 60fps monitor to be able to play PC games and also my PS5 on the same monitor, but turns out playing Doom Eternal and other games with frame dips below 60 (or even constant 60) is miserable for me.

So, I am going back down to 1440p to get a higher refresh rate and fps.

My main points are IPS for the colors and pop, gsync for no tearing, and anywhere between 120-200hz doesn't really matter.  Response time is not a huge deal to me as most monitors are below 5ms anyway it seems.  I also use my monitor for work but it's not editing or anything intensive.

So far I've got these three as potentials, does anyone have experience with them or know of any issues with them?  Or do you have other recommendations for a solid choice?

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07WQ4FXY9/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB&psc=1

I can't really see much of a difference between these but viewsonic is a bit more expensive not sure why. Also I had never heard of nano IPS before.  I am guessing it's just better than regular IPS?

for those prices i recommend this one

the msi's colors looks better and is normally worth 125usd more than the ones listed, but canadian prices are different, doesn't change the actual value of the monitors.

I'd strongly recommend the MSI MAG274QRF-QD @xg32 also mentioned. It's one of the best 1440p high refresh rate monitors.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

But  that monitor doesnt have a clamped srgb mode  right?  i heard it looks  highly oversatured when viewing normal srgb content.

Yes, but as 90% want to have the oversaturated look either way i don't see it as a big problem. And if you really care about color accuracity, you should have a colorimeter and be able to create an ICC profile. This will also clip the gamut for sRGB.

And other than that this monitor is measurably better in pretty much any way than other current offerings from LG, Asus, Acer, etc. in the same price class.

Are  there  any  softwares that let you clamp the color  gamut? I   cant believe msi  released such a good color  accurate  monitor then  just  didnt bother with  an sRGB mode lol.

If you're a patreon of Hardware Unboxed you can download the ICC profile they created while doing their claibration. Activating this ICC in windows will "software clip" the color gamut to what the application calls for. You might also find other reviewers like RTINGS.com that make their ICC public.

Yeah, it was an oversight. But like i said many people don't even care about accurate colors. More about saturated ones, even when it's oversaturated. So for most people it's no big deal.

Oh ok got it, thanks

But hardware unboxed said that the oversaturation was almost a dealbreaker or something and that everything looked sorta unnatural.

Tim from hardware unboxed is someone who'd rather have accuracity than anything else. Pretty much the same with me. But he is also a creator that needs color accuracity. So in his case it can be a dealbreaker. Most gamers however will gladly take oversaturated over accurate colors.

i've always liked it slightly oversaturated, nothing that can't be fixed with simple calibration anyway in the case of the QD.

In terms of color performance, the QD is really underrated, if the gl850 is worth 300usd  how the QD looks like in person +high refresh would make it worth double for me

I only returned 2 monitors ever and one of them basically had an srgb clamped panel, i forgot the model it looked like a washed out version of the 27GL850,

ARGB though is great, hdr/rec2020 is when it gets weird for me, there are also people who just prefer srgb.

TN high refresh has set the bar very low in the color department but newer monitors since 2018~ have made great strides.

I have to be honest I have no idea what any of you are talking about with the clamped srbg and ICC stuff XD  I had never heard of this?

simply put the msi are able to display way more colors than all the other monitors mention, it has better colors than most monitors under 800dollars, the "weird" comments come from the oversaturation of gamma/color out of the box, nothing you can't fix in the settings with a few minutes (just mess around with the settings til you are comfortable instead of using a clamped profile imho), though i have to say the out-of box settings really are ridiculous lol.

a decade ago a panel with this kinda color coverage cost over 1k usd, and those were 60hz, somehow they manage to offer a 144hz version for 400usd, this monitor should not be 400dollars, and it's the only monitor i can say that about in a positive light

Color Management for 3DCG | EIZO

low end gaming monitors would cover 100% srgb (older tn panels not even that)

the good 300-400dollar ips panels usually covers 90-95%of dci-p3 and 70-75% rec2020

the 1000+usd monitor i mentioned covers 101% argb (no rec2020 back then)

the msi monitor somehow does 100% argb (or more without clamp, i can't find the exact number) and 81% rec2020 at 400usd with a combination of cost cutting with 8bit+frc and qd

it looks nice

Is there a reason why the MSI is better than the other ones I listed?  If the srgb stuff hadn't been mentioned I would have gone with it but now I'm concerned?

Basically the monitor can display way more saturated colors that you need. 99% of all media that doesn't use HDR uses the sRGB color space. But if your monitor is not clamped and can do 100% argb (which is a much bigger color space) then it will "translate" a 100% red sRGB signal and use the 100% red signal the monitor is capable of. This will result in a much more saturated red than the creator of the media intended. So the colors will look "better" to many people, while being more inaccurate.

Most monitors that have the capabilities to display wide gamuts (wide gamut monitors are monitors that can comfortably exceed sRGB and have close to full coverage of DCI-P3 or Adobe RGB) then they normally have a dedicated "sRGB" picture mode that will result in "clamping" the colors to match the sRGB color space. In that case the monitor will deliver accurate colors just as the media creator intended. The only way to "clamp" the color gamut to the correct one with the MSI monitor is a so-called "ICC" profile. A software color profile inside windows that alters the "translation" between your GPU and monitor to be able to work against this downside.

But like i said above, many people want their colors to subjectively look good and generally don't care about it being 100% accurate. Color critical professionals are generally the people that will have calibration hardware and thus are able to create their own ICC profile.

The MSI monitor however is a very rare case of a "wide gamut monitor" that has no option to counter oversaturation of colors. This is especially noticeable since it has one of the widest color gamuts of any gaming monitor today. If you want the full story as why the MSI is the best one out of these monitors overall have a look at this video:

TLDR: The monitor is overall amazing. And people that need accuracity out of it's colors should already have the tools to counter the oversaturation problem.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

Yea I heard the QD is really good if you have a  calibration device. Ill probably get a M27q  since it has one of the  highest adobe  rgb coverage for its price  range.

When you get it, write if the first unit you got has any defects. Makes me wonder if Msi has improved their QC.

Been using it for 2 days now, I gotta say the colors POP they are so beautiful, never had a monitor like this.  The weird colors I mentionned was because I had HDR on which generally I don't like.  This monitor is so bright I had to go dark theme on every site.  But it looks amazing.  Gsync works great, buttery smooth framerate.  My only criticism so far, and this only applies because I work remotely, is that the stand is not as wide as some other monitors so on a standing desk it wobbles more than the LG monitors.

How does sRGB content look btw? Is it wildly oversaturated? Have you tried downloading ICC profiles?

I've heard that the latest firmware update for the monitor adds an sRGB clamp, are you able to confirm this? I can't find anything as far as update notes go, but it was very recently released https://www.msi.com/Monitor/support/Optix-MAG274QRF-QD#down-firmware

I tried to update the firmware and I only get an error, can't figure it out.  Not surprised considering this is MSI.  I'll have to contact their support monday

i wouldn't bother with the firmware update if you are happy with the performance, the whole point of the monitor is not having a clamp, since most of the monitors can do srgb anyway, you can also do it with the hardware icc profile, though not recommended, it's not as risky as updating firmware.

I tried to update the firmware and I only get an error, can't figure it out.  Not surprised considering this is MSI.  I'll have to contact their support monday

Fair enough, I'm only curious because I intend to get this same monitor, but it seems like a very solid choice so far.

This monitor is so bright I had to go dark theme on every site.

Why not just lower the brightness to a comfortable value?

But i'm happy you enjoy your new monitor!

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.
