4chan proving once again they are the leading image sharing website.

Today we added support for WebM files on 4chan’s image boards.

While WebM is technically a video file format, it offers many advantages over animated GIFs—namely superior image quality, support for more than 256 colors, and reduced file size. Its main disadvantage is browser compatibility, however 86% of 4chan’s visits come from browsers that include full or partial support for WebM, and plug-ins are available for those that don’t (like Internet Explorer and Safari).

Why didn't they use APNG? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/APNG

APNG cant have audio streams though, right?

4Chan has disabled sound at the moment, but im sure they will allow it once they can reliably control when it plays so that people cant post screamers and stuff like that.

It was to replace GIFs, so I don't think audio is a big issue.

Because APNG has a much worse MB/quality ratio (barely any better than gif) and much much worse support (it's not even a standard and as far as I know only supported in Firefox).

WebM is a much better choice. Might also be more future proof since you can put VP9 video in it (and moot could enable sound with the click of a button if he wanted to).

Hopefully more sites will follow suit. gif needs to die in a fire. It's absolutely awful.

So @Slick @LinusTech, how long until LTT supports WebM or something better than gif?

The file size is still awful for video, which is what most people use GIFs for today. Webm is the superior format.
