Buy new MacBook now or wait

My old MacBook Pro is biting the dust and I was curious if I should wait to buy one or trade in my current for 350 get the student discount and the free AirPods now. And get a nice m1 MacBook Pro with a Touch Bar and all that, or if should just wait and see if m1x is coming out this year. But also I would need a laptop for school so I don’t know what to do

Do you need the Pro? The M1 Air is great for a lot of things, and you'd save some money that way. Also, could you possibly get more for your current MacBook?

What's wrong with it? You can easily sell a 2015 MBP for more than $350.

The 2015 MBP IMO was peak Macbook.

If they keyboard and trackpad don't work, I'd consider getting another 2015 until the M1X 16" comes out.

Or just get new keyboard and trackpad. But yes, i would repair the thing until M1x news is clear. Also, whats your work that warrant the bigger screen of a Pro?

I used it for video and photo editing as well as school, the only reason I wouldn’t want to wait is cause a laptop would be nice to have back for school things

The new MacBook Pros are reportedly due this fall (between September and November), so I'd hold out if you absolutely want a MacBook Pro.

Keep in mind that the MacBook Air is virtually as fast as the current Pro outside of sustained heavy loads (as in serious media editing). So if you're more concerned about price than raw performance, the Air will do just fine.

Yes, you'll need 100% Load (Benchmarks, long renders) for several Minutes, untill the Air starts throttling by up to 15%~ (not a big deal tbh), before that, the Performance is identical to the Pro.

Since the new 14" with M1x will probably be <200 bucks more expensive as a similar spec'd 13" pro (512gb ssd, 16gb Ram), i'd wait for that, or just get the Air with 16gb Ram.

Most people really REALLY do not "need" the Pro over the Air.

Unless you really like the Touchbar, the last extra battery life, 500 nits Screen, or you have alot of sustained heavy Load (but if you do, might as well wait for M1x).

But i can spoil you there: No student right now needs more performance than the M1. Even the M1 performance is WAY higher than any student will ever need. Especially when it's only school, and not University (where you usually run more complex Applications).

If you need one noe, get one now. If not, wait for the next Apple Event in a Month.

I am in uni, I just don’t know if it’s worth it to wait for the legacy ports to return because they seem like it would be more useful than just two thunderbolt

Oh, right. Those Ports are indeed an Argument.
I think/hope, they will announce it together with the iPhone next month, so if it's not urgent, wait. M1 models won't run away
