Bye-o Jeff. Hi, Andy!: Andy Jassy finally takes over as Amazon chief

WolframaticAlpha

Summary

Amazon founder and mascot, Jeff Bezos today finally stepped down as CEO of Amazon after 27 years at the company. Bezos had announced his retirement in January 2021. He handed over the 1.7 trillion dollar Amazon empire over to Andy Jassy, who has been instrumental in the success of Amazon Web Services. Jassy joined the company in 1997. Bezos will still remain as Amazon's chairman and one of the largest individual shareholder. Jassy previously has been the head of AWS.

The transition comes as Amazon navigates a tricky period in its history. The company is reaping huge profits as consumers, locked at home because of the COVID-19 crisis, become more reliant on both e-commerce and online services. That in turn has attracted regulatory scrutiny from lawmakers concerned about the power Amazon has over the retailers who use it as an online storefront.

My thoughts

It would be quite interesting to see how Jassy, while no doubt qualified in the field of ecommerce, a cloud guy manages the massive behemoth that is amazon. While you may have your personal opinions about bezos, he was a very driven leader who brought ecommerce, corporate cloud and numerous other innovations to the market.

Bezos is taking the position of executive chair, not CEO. The CEO is now Andy Jassy, should probably update the post to avoid confusion.

People have this misconception that the CEO manages the whole company. He will have so many advisors and other execs that will allow him to collect his pay-cheque unhindered.

well, yeah. But bezos seemed pretty autocratic(in the book "the everything store"). If a company is used to following an autocratic leader, then changing the culture will be a huge priority for jassy
