May seem like a stupid question to some. The corresponding motherboards are the M5a990fx Pro R2.0 and the h87m D3H. Budget is $280 or less for both. GPU is the r9 270, if anyone is wondering, and I will be using a 212 EVO.

8320 if you want to overclock i5-4570 if you do not want to overclock

I was thinking that if I can get a decent enough overclock out of the 8320, It would beat the advantage the 4570 has over it.

yeah but you can not do a huge overclock on it since you will be using the Hyper 212 EVO but you could still get a somewhat good overclock on it, but i do not know if it would beat it, because it does depend on what games you play

We'll have to see what kind of chip I get. Considering the binning that goes on, I hope I would get at least one that could hit 4.5.

most likely i do not know if you could get that but maybe because overclocking is sort of random so you could get one that does not overclock very well but personally i would get the 8320 just because of having the option of overclock versus the i5 4570 which cannot be overclock so if you decide that you want to, you cant but the choice is yours

depends on if you are willing to deal with the AMD platform and their quality of mobos vs intels. I personally would get a 4570 with a b87 board. OC'ing a CPU is mainly just for fun more so than actual performance until it comes to games like battlefield which are CPU intense.

I currently have an 8320 and the 990FX PRO R2.0. CPU is overclocked to 4.2Ghz 1.32V. with a Hyper 212 evo.

No heat problems what so ever. When I play BF4 64 mans CPU Core temp stays around 30-35c.

You could get to 4.5 no problem I'm sure. I just put mine to 8350 speeds without spending the extra $$.

If you have a Micro center around you I'd get the CPU and Mobo there. Picked up the CPU for $99 and Mobo $~100.

Very pleased with this current CPU and mobo.

How high could you go if you wanted to?

Highest I've personally took it was 4.4ghz ran a few benchmarks didn't crash or freeze or overheat. I haven't really needed to push it any further but i'm certain i could if i wanted too.

Oh also, I use all the power saving features "Cool n quiet" etc. They do not effect the overclock.

I've pushed it to 4.5ghz with 2 gpus in the case and stress tested it for 12+ hours. I'm sure he can overclock the 8320 a decent amount with the same cooler as me.

overclocking is random so you may be able to achieve that overclock and he may not be able to

I'd get a i5 4440 and a H81 motherboard. That will give you a lot more money to invest in a better GPU than a R9 270 as that will make more if a difference.

You can easily overclock the 8320 from the stock 3.5Ghz to 4.3Ghz on the stock cooler, with the 212 EVO you're looking at getting an even higher clock.

In the grand-scheme of things going with an 8320 is a wiser choice for gaming as well. Seeing as next-gen games and game engines are coded for 8 (AMD) CPU cores you're going to see better CPU scaling with the FX 8300 series compared to the i5s from intel.

The locked i5 Haswell CPUs compete with the six core Piledriver CPUs like the FX 6350 & 6300. The 8320 is going to be more powerful.
