Everyone needs to chill a bit regarding Windows 11's bullshit CPU requirements

D13H4RD

I know a lot of people are understandably filled with rage over Microsoft's decision to only support CPUs that are part of Intel's 8th-gen/AMD's Ryzen 2nd gen family or newer for Windows 11, alongside a confirmation of sorts that the decision wasn't made with security in mind (despite the newer CPUs containing hardware-level mitigations for exploits such as Spectre). And I agree that it's a pile of bullshit. But I think people are really letting their anger get ahead of themselves.

Just because you won't get the latest and greatest OS at launch doesn't mean your system is a total brick. Let me repeat that;

Just because you won't get the latest and greatest OS at launch doesn't mean your system is a total brick.

Windows 10 is still officially supported with updates and security patches until 2025, so many systems will still be covered against many security holes during this period. And even when it's 2026, it's not like your entire system becomes worthless. All of your applications will still work, and your system will work in the same way as it usually has. You really don't need Windows 11, especially at launch. Given Microsoft's constant flip-flopping and even the heads of their own team scrambling for a response, it's almost certain that Windows 11 will be an absolute shitshow at launch, and will need months of big patches to really get it into a state where it's reliable enough for consumer use.

Who knows? Maybe Microsoft finally finds logic and actually learns to communicate better. We'll see...

Have you actually tried it?

Under the hood 11 is 10 with a new UI, it has all the stability of 10 (including its 6 years of updates) right now, heck in some areas its better than 10 right now and so far we've only seen a leaked early build.

I've been running it as my main OS on my laptop since the build leaked and haven't had a single issue with anything.

Even in its current unfinished state its still MILES better than 7, 8 and 10 were at launch.

Main Rig:-

Ryzen 7 3800X | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | 16GB Team Group Dark Pro 3600Mhz | Corsair MP600 1TB PCIe Gen 4 | Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse | Corsair H115i Platinum | WD Black 1TB | WD Green 4TB | EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W | Asus TUF GT501 | Samsung C27HG70 1440p 144hz HDR FreeSync 2 | Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS |

Server:-

Intel NUC running Server 2019 + Synology DSM218+ with 2 x 4TB Toshiba NAS Ready HDDs (RAID0)

10 hasn't been great for me, and knowing how hard Microsoft is flip-flopping with system requirements, it doesn't inspire confidence.

First day of big releases has always been less-than-ideal based on experience. I doubt 11 will be different.

I actually quite frustrated with this, i mean yoooooooo, its a fuckin' chip, you can't even use it for anything, even if you're diy enthusiast you'd be also need a frickin firmware that compatible with a certain motherboard to make it work

This chip is only good for mothboard and maybe some other and no MORE...

Oh and don't tell me people actually sell this as one piece products,

Chip like this usually bought up in order of reels, some reels can go upto 500 chips and manufacture usually bought them in 2 even 3 digits quantity

Selling it like that with only one piece is kinda pathetic, nonetheless the scalpers themselves already pathetic

Why should we shut up and roll over and take microsofts shit? Thats like saying "yeah guys this game was bad, but at least you can still play the original good one!" Sure thats a true statement but it doesnt excuse Microsoft, or absolve them of guilt. People have a right to be mad about this and demand they change it. Period. They are a company, they make products for US, we dont serve them and kiss their feet thanking them for every little crumb we get, nor should we.

I think it's a great idea to be enraged that they won't continue to give updates to our computers and thus make them e-waste eventually.

Yes we know that Windows 10 will "still work" even after they stop giving us security fixes for the unlimited number of attacks that are made on modern computers.

Of course we know that.

Yeah it seems a bit hypocritical how they're talking about sustainability while also essentially saying "oh, your computer is more than 4 years old? Here's how to buy a new one!".

Meanwhile in 2024: Ivy Bridge-E has finally retired from gaming (but is still not dead).

Desktop: AMD Ryzen 9 7900X; 64GB DDR5-6000; Radeon RX 6800XT Reference / Server: Intel Xeon 1680V2; 64GB DDR3-1600 ECC / Laptop:  Dell Precision 5540; Intel Core i7-9850H; NVIDIA Quadro T1000 4GB; 32GB DDR4

The point isn't to not be mad at Microsoft.

The point is that people are panicking over their perfectly good computers not being able to run Windows 11 according to Microsoft's bullshit, when they're still able to use their computers as they've always had even if they can't use the latest and greatest operating system on day one.

Nowhere did I say "bend over and get fucked by Microsoft because they clearly know more than us". Everyone has the right to demand that Microsoft change its mind or at least communicate better about its policies. The entire point is that plenty of people are going all "sky is falling" over how their computers will somehow be useless without the latest OS, when in reality, the computer will work just as well as it always had.

If you've actually read my post, you'd find that I have always agreed that Microsoft is on the wrong path and that they would need to correct this or at the very least, communicate much better. At the same time, I disagree over the mass hysteria over computers being useless because they don't get OS upgrades on day one. The irony is that this mentality contributes to ewaste.
