Best Overall GPU for Pavillion p7-1235

Hey all. I came across a Pavillion p7-1235 while at work and took it home with me since it was was about to be thrown out. It works fine but it basically has nothing in it but factory defaults. I did a bit of research and the CPU is fine until I want to run more recent games but I don't plan on playing anything too crazy so my main focus is my GPU. I have a decent budget around ~$250-300 and was wondering what best fits for this PC without needed too much. Thanks in advance guys.

That CPU is so old that there's not gonna be a lot of worthwhile upgrades

Probably something around the performance of a 750Ti/760 is the furthest you'd really want to go, after that you'd just be spending money for no real reason.

I see the GTX 570 out benchmarks the 750-Ti on most categories. Would that be the better alternative?

Not really. Drivers for Fermi got killed off quite a while ago. You could probably? find an RX460 for a not-completely-retarded price if you stalked eBay enough, so that might be an option.
