If you could redo your build, what would you do?

CCap

As the title implicates, if you could redo your rig/setup, what would you do?

Here is what I'd change:

First, I would change my case-- I hate it.

Aesthetically she's a beaut but to be honest it was a pain in the rear to get her going, and nearly impossible to manage cables. It doesn't look awful, but it was a hell of a challenge to get it where it is. I have the Bitfenix colossus and I really hate the inverted motherboard layout of the case. I really do. I will be changing my case to an H440 here soon, and will snag an Asus Maximus VI Formula to fill up the case a bit better than my Maximus VI Gene will do.

(this is the fault of the inverted motherboard layout) My H100i rubs against my graphics card much more than I would like, it almost kinks the cable which pretty much eliminates my chances of ever SLI'ing this beast... (Which was the reason I went mATX instead of ITX))

My HDD:

I bought a Seagate Baracuda before I had known about the WD black, had I know about it, I would have picked one up. Baracudas = loud = I don't like.

My AF120 Red LED Fans:

These were a terrible idea, they are really loud and little did I know they aren't PWM. :(

My 780ti:

Only because I am going to be upgrading out of my case will I change my graphics card, I would much rather have a KPE than a reference card. I'd be watercooling the KPE after a few months to leave me room to upgrade to 900 series or whatever they come out with at that point.

All in all, my build was rushed. I had planned out a really elaborate 3,000 build, and then my budget got cut by $1,000. I had to replan everything, I panicked, and ordered it in a rush. I am unable to RMA most of it (I'm going to RMA my AF120's and pick up some gentle typhoons).

I would have saved to go SSD only and I would have picked a better case, like the r4 or something

Really nothing I would change. Only things I would think of changing are getting low profile RAM so I can eventually upgrade to 4 DIMM's with my current cooler. I also would have like to have gone with a different Z77 motherboard only because of the ugly (And easily breakable :/) PCIe clips on my Asrock Z77 Extreme4.

My Current Build:

Intel i5 3570K @ 4.4GHz 1.11V, Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, Asrock Z77 Extreme4, Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600MHz, Samsung 840 EVO 250GB, Asus GTX 760 DCII Overclocked, Corsair CX600M

I hate my case, the NZXT switch 810 is garbage, the front fan filter doesn't pop out the stealth optical bay always catches, it's too big and empty with a standard ATX board and it's plastic. I just bought the Enthoo Primo to replace this case and I just ordered a swifttech H320 all in one to fill the top and so that I can throw a water block on my 7970 and another rad to fill out my case, she's gonna be sexy.

Why do you always die right after I fix you?

I would have gone i7-4770k/GTX 780/850w PSU. My initial plans were solid, but then I wanted more and added. She's a good rig, don't get me wrong though.

I was thinking about doing a completely new build at the end of this year, but now I've decided to mod my Corsair 330R case for 2x 240mm rads and build using everything I currently have minus the 760's/650w. My i5-4670k still has more headroom, so once I'm on a custom loop I'll crank it up some more.

More cost effective to mod. And more fun :D

Never say it's not broken. Everything is broken. Why? Because everything needs MOAR POWA!

If I could redo my build, I would get an Asus GTX 780, SSD, mATX motherboard, and mATX case with a window.

Well, for a start I'd probably go back to HDDs over SSDs.

Seriously, boot times don't bother me at all for a desktop PC, and launch times for applications really aren't that much faster (particularly games, which usually make you sit through adverts anyway). Not a fan of SSDs at all on the desktop, the controllers are universally terrible in my experience - I've bought 4 SSDs (each from different manufacturers, with at least 2 different controller types), 3 of which have controller problems.

I would have planned it better, I wasted a lot of money going for a budget build only to start buying high end parts, I would have definitely gone intel over AMD. Live and learn lol

Bigger SSD for a bigger booth drive, 2 2TB WD Blacks for a RAID 1 array, and a more mature looking case. I like my Storm Enforcer case and all, but after seeing the cases that Fractal or and Corsair have been releasing in the last year, I wouldn't mind getting one.

I would have gone for a bigger PSU. I didn't even think that 750w might not be enough, but I've thought about adding a second card if the prices on them keep dropping back to what they should be at some point in the future, and if I were to do that I would need a larger PSU.
