I9-10900k 5.3Ghz?

5.3Ghz is a single/double core boost speed:

Of course there is some small variance between chips, so 4.8 and 4.9 Ghz are about even with each other.

So it comes down to the 5.3Ghz is only for single-core tasks.

Of course you could try to overclock further, but nothing above the speeds you're getting now is guaranteed.

I am a new to pc building and just finished my first build however I see that the 10900k can up to 5.3ghz on a single core yet only see it go up to 4.8ghz sometimes? do I need to overclock to see that clock speed or?

 

current build still waiting for a 3060 or 3070

This is normal - the single core boost is rarely ever seen. The default boost table on my motherboard is 53x with 1-2 cores active, which is rarely ever the case in a Windows environment.

 

Typically you will see short spikes of up to 5.3ghz, but it will never be for more than a moment and you'll only really see it in monitoring software logs.

 

4.9ghz all-core can happen with TVB, but then it throttles 100mhz down to 4.8ghz if you surpass 70c.

 

After that, when you surpass the 250w PL2 53s power limit, it will throttle down even further to around 4.2ghz.

 

Or if you have a motherboard that ignores spec, it will stay at 4.9ghz forever if you can keep below 70c, and 4.8ghz if you can't. And then throttle if temperatures hit 100c.

much thanks thought maybe not having the extra 4 pin connector on my motherboard was the  problem

I think the 8 pin alone can do 235w? or 336? I can't remember. In either case, it's still less than you'd see in stock operation without running some kind of unrealistic power virus like P95.
