App won't install because of a Windows Service Start Failure

I've been trying to use my Sony A5100 (ILCE-5100) Camera as a Webcam since it's much better than my cheap 10$ webcam.

To use the camera, I must first need to download their app, Imaging Edge Webcam. After I tried to install it, nothing happens. No apps, nothing. Tried reinstalling it and it brought me to a dialogue that says something among the lines of

"It's already installed, please uninstall first to install the application again.".

I then ventured unto my C: drive, in it there's a Sony folder that has the Imaging Edge Webcam application located. Whenever I try to launch the app, this dialogue shows:

Not long after I just decided to put the whole folder in the bin and installed it again since there's no Uninstall.exe in the folders. Still nothing shows up, and the folder is made again in the same directory. Launching the .exe still puts the dialogue above.

I am completely lost. I have 0 idea how to fix this, Googling and using the fixes provided does nothing. Is there something wrong with my Windows installation? Or is that completely unrelated?

I do remember using a debloat software about a year ago to lighten up Windows' CPU usage, but that's it. I've never encountered this at all before this particular app. Like... never.

(a) is the application Win10 compatible?

(b) have you tried running it in compatibility mode?

(c) Does everything else in your pc work like it should?

(d) have you tried spinning up a VM of a bone-stock win10 and trying to install it there to see if it's your existing win10 install that's bad, or the application?

(e) there is no (e)

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

This software isn't meant to be launched, it just runs as a service and creates a webcam you can select in your comms apps.

I guess it would make sense. But still, the app won't launch in the first place after installing. Any thoughts on why that is?

No fixes found online either for that one 😞

Again there's nothing to launch or any user interface. It's basically a driver.

Again there's nothing to launch or anything visible user-side.

There should be an install window of some sorts after I install the app, like shown below:

However, this doesn't show on my screen.

That's Imaging Edge Desktop which is a photo management app, the "Imaging Edge Webcam" driver is different even if the names are close.

Basically once installed you should just see a webcam in your comms software, if your camera's connected you have the picture and if not you get a splash.

You'll see that framerate is terrible on the USB2-based cams though, unusable IMO for anything other than basic conf calls.

  • 2 years later...

Hey guys.

Just stumbled across this saga out of pure desperation, as I am having the exact same problems Bamzu seemed to be having. I can't figure out a fix even from this forum, out of my novice levels. I did out of stupidity delete all that was in the folder, except the WebcamLaucher Application because that wont go away since 'its being used in another application'. Please help guys i suck at this crap.
