I dont know why , but my laptop takes more than 7 mins from power button press to a usable browser window (sorry if shouldn' ask questions (new here))

My laptop is hp14q , it has 4 gb of ram , Windows 10 , integrated graphics .

It has a 1 TB HDD

Its about 1 year old (3 days short xD)

But it is massive slow.

It takes about 4 minutes to load the desktop screen after button press .

Another minute to bring up icons.

Another 150 seconds before bringing a stable browser window.

Total , about 7 minutes.
I have disabled Majority of startup processes.

Its about 50% free in storage.
Many people i know tell that's not how much a laptop should take to boot , if its an year old.

Can software's like Blender and Unity slow down laptops which are not graphics intense? (at least that's what my dad suggest)

Is switching to a SSD a solution here?

But y has my HDD slowed down in an year itself..........

you might want to look at your autostart programs
and yes, switching to and ssd will help a lot, but 7 mins seems like a lot

Then maybe try to switch to an SSD
If that is not an option, reinstall windows. 7 Mins without a lot of startup programs is to long even for an HDD

Empty your temp folder. Windows for some reason, as the temp folder fills up, slows down file searches on the drive.

Go to your search box, type %TEMP% and press enter, that should (after a min) open the temp folder. Just select all the files/folders in that folder (CTRL + A) then Shift + Del to delete them. That should gain you back some speed.

Defragging the drive is always a good thing to do to an HDD once a year (NOT an SSD as it wastes writes and wears it prematurely). I like UltimateDefrag for doing that, and you can put your most frequently used files at the start of the drive (the fastest part).

I used to use CCleaner, it was a good tool for cleaning crap, but no idea how good it is nowadays, since Piriform was aquired by Avast.

windows has an internal tool to defragment the HDD and it also doesnt work, if you have an SSD installed, to not wear it unnecessarily

How can a 1 year old laptop only have 4GB Ram ?

You probably can add Ram and should

I'm willing to swim against the current.

It should delete files if they are in use with a program that is open. SO just leave your browser open, and if it's using the files, it won't delete them, and give you the RETRY/SKIP dialog box.

That seems to be enough for normal browsing and light office work.
But 4 GB of RAM is really not a lot, especially if running windows
It might be enough for Linux mint or something

To me it's no wonder, with an igpu 4GB is way too low.

Don't even bother, buy a book

If you are upgrading, I would go straight to 16GB
even 8 isn't a whole lot today

also, 16GB of ram doesn't cost a lot today
get a 1TB ssd too and you will have a pretty fast machine

that would be really annoying
producing a laptop in 2020 with only 4GB of ram is practically producing e-waste

Yeah, 4GB will be a struggle when some is nicked for the IGPU. Apparently the laptop can take up to 32GB of RAM, it has two slots which is good. It also has an M.2 Slot, so you could add an M.2 SSD into it, and install your OS there.

But it means taking it apart, and it's a pain of a laptop to get into.

4GB isn't a lot, but it will do for Windows. Lighter Linux distros are good options with less than 4GB, but I was able to multitask on an old HP laptop with SolidWorks (3D CAD), Word, PowerPoint and Edge with just 4GB RAM. The RAM isn't the issue here, but the hard drive.

Desktop - i5-9600KF @4.8GHz all core, MSI Z390-A PRO, 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance 3000MHz, MSI GTX 1660S OC 6GB, WD Blue 500GB M.2 SSD, Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM HDD

Laptop - ASUS ZenBook 14 with ScreenPad, i7-1165G7, Xe iGPU 96EU, 16GB Octa-Channel 4200MHz, MX450 2GB, 512GB SSD with 32GB Optane

Old Laptop 1 - HP Pavilion 15, A10-9600P, R5 iGPU, 8GB, R8 M445DX, 2TB HDD

Old Laptop 2 - HP Pavilion 15 TouchSmart, i3-3217U, Intel HD 4000, 4GB, 1TB HDD

iPad 2018 - 128GB

iPhone XR - 128GB

I would keep that slot free, just in case, you need it later
