unraid help

hey guys

need some help,

i am confused at what split levels i should set on my unraid server,

my share strucuture is like this

//movies/A/Avengers_age_of_ultron/film

//TvShows/M/Marvels_agent_of_sheild/Season_1/episodes

i want it so that all that the files from the one film are one one disk

and that the one series is stored on one disk to prevent having to wait for a disk to spin up

thanks

You can do fill, which fills a single disk at a time, but personally I prefer to do high-water. This fills a disk up to a % before moving onto the next and tries to keep them fairly even. It's a good compromise and high chance each folder will have its files on the same disk.

Also do you have that many movies/shows to be bothered splitting them up into lettered subfolders?

Ideally things like Plex/Emby dont really like that

I set mine up so any TV series is on it's own folder on a drive but anything above that could be on any drive.

The only thing I want to avoid is losing various episodes of MANY shows (I call it 'Swiss Cheeseing') and then having to hunt down individual episodes from backups to replace them.  I'd rather lose entire series cause it's far easier to know and relocate backups of whats missing.

In short, when given the choice between losing 10 random eps each from 100 shows, or losing 10 shows entirely out of 100 shows, I'd rather lose the whole ten.

You'll want the split only top level setting in this case. For movies I have this as well. For series I set it to splity only top two levels as its not a big deal for me to split seasons across multiple drives.

Here's a nice explanation of the split levels: https://forums.serverbuilds.net/t/guide-directory-splitting-in-unraid/1137

Crystal: CPU: i7 7700K | Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix Z270F | RAM: GSkill 16 GB@3200MHz | GPU: Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti FE | Case: Corsair Crystal 570X (black) | PSU: EVGA Supernova G2 1000W | Monitor: Asus VG248QE 24"

Laptop: Dell XPS 13 9370 | CPU: i5 10510U | RAM: 16 GB

Server: CPU: i5 4690k | RAM: 16 GB | Case: Corsair Graphite 760T White | Storage: 19 TB
