questions regarding a storage server

hello.

i was looking for storage ideas for mining Chia and i got over this:

and i have a few questions: 

is it a pc after all? i see it was power supplies included but no details about processor or anything.

is it just hdds and psus? i can see it has IO can i add a motherboard to it? which ones?

what about adding ssds to it?

there is so few information about it

not a pc, its a sas jbod.

you need a sas controller to use it in a pc

sure, any sas/sata drive will work, but for chia, id get a enterprise pcie ssd for making plots

can you explain a bit what is a sas controller ?

basically i want to move the plots from a PC with high end processor, ram and ssd.

Sas controller turns pcie to sas so you cana connect more drives. This box just lets you store lots of drives.

 

Here is a example of a controller you would want.

 

Just saying, these boxes are very loud, heavy and power hungry.

You will still need to pair this with a computer to work.

There pretty easy to use, but id really do some more research here beforing spening like 28k on this.

basically i buy a box full of 60 HDDs, and i must plug in somehow 60 SATA cables in a pc. these SAS controllers are actually some adapters to sacrifice x8 pcie slots or whatever to plug in those HDDs ??

Well that box has a sas expander included, so it splits the 4/8 sas ports from that card into the 60 ports needed for the drives.

 

But really do some more research here, lots of weird edge cases.
