if you are going intel, get a 11400f. its a good upgrade over the 10th gen equivalent.

btw, the link in the yellow box embeds here, could you please post that?

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

what?

Theyre known to be the best, in compatibility,  especially their trident z series.

I know linus at some point said that they use g.skill trident z, for their test benched because its the only kits that they got to run ant xmp on bassically everything.

I was going to suggest this. It's only $25 more for the CPU and $23 more for the MB, but it's a significant upgrade over the 10400f

Intel Core i5-11400F 2.6 GHz 6-Core Processor (BX8070811400F) - PCPartPicker
ASRock B560M-HDV Micro ATX LGA1200 Motherboard (B560M-HDV) - PCPartPicker

Main build:
Ryzen 7 1700 pro
Asus B350

32GB DDR4 3200mhz

Asus ROG Strix GTX 1070

If you're not sure you'll be able to buy a GPU, make sure you have a backup plan. I'd suggest grabbing an i5-11400 to have an iGPU. You'll have the added benefit of being able to use QuickSync once you do get a GPU.

Make sure to quote me or use @PorkishPig to notify me that you replied!

I've had g.skill RAM before, and under the fancy heat spreaders were two *entirely* different types of RAM modules, which caused untold amount of issues.

I've had nothing but bad luck with g.skill in other builds as well, to the point I refuse to use them.

But like I said, unpopular opinion.

Just, brand new, sealed kit. My system went ape when I put them in, all manner of errors. Took the sticks out, noticed 1 was green and 1 was blue (the board the RAM chips were soldered on to) popped the heatspreaders off, fond out different sticks underneath, including different manuf of the RAM chips.

Returned, got a replcement set.

Same thing.

Trashed it, went with crucial for that build.

Had other issues with g.skill as well, just overall flaky, don't like them one bit

Not bad, but as others have said I'd probably get a CPU with an iGPU and run that while you wait for a video card to come around. Otherwise you're unable to use your current system until you get one...at which point you might as well wait and not build one at all.

Some other things I'd change:

  • There's usually better coolers for not much more. I can't recall what the cheaper ones are, but Noctua for example makes coolers you can get around $50 - $60. Not that this CPU will get that hot.
  • Get RAM that's at 3200mhz or better and CL16 or lower.
  • Drop the SSD for something from another brand, in 1TB capacity. You'll run out of space pretty quickly with only 500GB of storage on hand.

And riceboy: All fancy with pretty bodykit (heatspreaders, etc), and no performance (the aforementioned issues)

Bad batch? Certainly possible. Got them from BestBuy at the time. But it was enough for me to swear them off.

Honestly that sounds like a bad experience, not something that's indicative of a bad company. I've had plenty of luck with G.Skill RAM - I've got some in my main desktop and it's been rock solid.
