My iPhone 7 Home Button has a crack in it. Do you know what damage could have been done?

My iPhone 7 home button has cracked. I left it in a coat pocket on a table and someone must have pushed it onto the ground with my bag. When I took my phone out to do something on it I noticed that it had broke. The only possible ways it could have broken are:

• My bag fell on my phone
• Someone stepped on my phone
• When the phone fell off the table in my coat it got damaged by the impact.

My phone is still usable and the phone automatically detected that the home button was damaged and disabled Touch Id. It also automatically added AssistiveTouch. By this information could anyone predict:

• If it is repairable and how much it will cost do so
• What has been damaged by the cracked home button

The button itself is made of glass, so a simple drop could have broken it. You can get it replaced, but you'll lose Touch ID functionality unless Apple replaces it. I think they would replace the entire display assembly in that case.

Oh ok, so the home button can be fixed with new glass but I need apple to sort out touch id. Correct me if i am wrong

You are correct. You have to have Apple replace the home button for toutchid, but anyone can replace the home button and have the other functions of it work still

You'd have to replace the entire home button itself, not the glass. If you want Touch ID then don't try to repair it yourself - take it to Apple for a screen replacement.

Right ok, I don't trust myself to do it and I am not sure in my area of any good repair shops so I'll just take it to Apple, even though it will be much more expensive. I'll try getting them to just fix button and not the Touch ID

As far as I'm aware they will not do that. They'll have to do a full display replacement, even if the display isn't broken. If you want Touch ID that's what you'll have to do.

I don't think so. I'd contact Apple to see what they'll do for you.
