HD 7950 or R9 280X?

Mdkhasid

Hi there,
I already have Sapphire HD 7950 Vapor X graphics card, now I want to upgrade it with Sapphire R9 280X VaporX Tri X. Now my actual question is do I have to change my power supply for that cause it says I need 750W of power supply to run the R9 280X but I have Thermaltake Toughpower 650W. Right now I can't upgrade my PSU, so should I go for R9 280X or remain with the 7950? Thanks in advance for your help.

Processor: Intel Core i5 4440 3.1 GHz
Motherboard: Gigabyte B85M-D3H
RAM: G.Skill 4x2=8GB DDR3 1600MHz
GPU: Sapphire HD 7950 Vapor-X OC with Boost Edition 3GB DDR5
PSU: Thermaltake Toughpower 650W

Second this, It'll give a better performance increase.

You will not get a huge performance boost, both cards are on the par when it comes to performance.

To be fair, huge is a relative term.

Both cards are not on par performance wise. They are in the same ballpark, but not the same. A 280X is equivalent to a 7970 GHz Edition card. A 280, if you can get one (I've personally never seen one in stores yet), would be equivalent of a 7950.

Generally speaking though, the difference isn't huge, and the 7950 used to have a better price/performance ratio until they basically became impossible to find (some exceptions).

^ Pretty much. The difference is that of a 280X vs a 280.

A 600W PSU should be enough for a typical system using a 280X. At least, that's what I've heard so far. It is odd that a 750W is recommended on the box (as I also saw on my 280X).

Not exactly on par. The 280x is an underclocked 7970 ghz rebrand, or just a 7970 rebrand for short.
