Advice for upgrading my PC

Go to solution Solved by Downkey,

11400F + B560 board. Great combo, that will be faster than the 9700K in many games

Added the 500GB SSD because apparently you don’t have one

And added the PSU because your current one sucks.

I'm looking to upgrade my current PC and these were the parts I was planning on throwing in. Is there anything that sticks out to anyone as a waste of money, compatibility issue, or an other concerns. Advice would be greatly appreciated! I've built 2 computers so far, so I understand the concept of putting them together. That being said I am wondering if I should be worried about switching out the mother board and CPU on a PC that is already running and operating. Is there any reason to believe that the computer wouldn't function as normal after the upgrades are put in? Besides the obvious of driver updates?

Do you currently have a gpu?

What is it?...

To me the only thing that can be improved is the power supply, the rest is so far pretty good

The power supply sticks out like a sore thumb considering the price of the rest of the build. I completely understand that the whole rig won't use anywhere near as much as 430W as it is, but, it is also only Bronze rated and has few, if not no measures in place to prevent damage in case it fails or encounters a power surge. Not to mention the fact that if you did want to buy a GPU eventually, you will likely have to buy another power supply.

I'd say it makes sense to spend more money on a better power supply now in order to spend less with future upgrades as well as being able to keep a better component longevity.

My Rig:

Xeon E5 1680 V2 @ 4.5GHz - Asus Rampage IV Extreme X79 Mobo - 64GB DDR3 1600MHz - 8 x 8GB Corsair Vengeance Low Profile - CAS 10-10-10-27 - AMD Radeon RX 6700XT Sapphire Pulse 12GB - DeepCool E-Shield E-ATX Tempered Glass Case - 1 x 1TB Crucial P1 NVMe SSD - BeQuiet Straight Power 11 850W Gold+ Quad rail - Fractal Design Celsius S36 & 6 x 120mm silent fans - Lenovo KBBH21 - Corsair Glaive RGB Pro - Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit

Monitors - 3 x Acer Nitro 23.8" 1080p 75Hz IPS 1ms Freesync Panels = AMD Eyefinity @ 75Hz

get a psu that will fit your future gpu.

I would advise getting quality 700-850W

get extra fans for that case, use them on the upper mount and maybe add a front one. you can find Arctic F12 packs for cheap

Right now the GPU I have is a Asus Geforce GTX 1070, my current motherboard is a ASROCK b360m, 16 Gb of DDR4 (I'm not sure of the speed I believe it is 3200), a generic 1 TB hard drive, the case and PSU are the same.

So do you already have the CPU? The 9700K is a pretty bad buy in 2021.

Also what is your budget for the upgrade?

$500 is going to be the limit for me, right now I have a Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-8350K CPU @ 4.00GHz, 4 Core(s). I've found that my current GPU can handle almost everything I play (GTA, Overwatch, COD, insurgency, etc.) on high to ultra settings. However my CPU gets so bogged down that I get massive amounts of FPS drops and screen tearing.

Also I only recently discovered how Intel names their CPU's and I realized that my current motherboard (ASROCK b360m) isn't capable of overclocking, but my CPU is.

Thanks for the help, if you don't mind me asking why is the Core i5 faster than the i7 even though the i7 has 2 more cores?

For what you are doing, 8 cores is useless. It’s about the speed of the cores. The single and multi core speed is much faster on 11th Gen compared to 9th Gen. The 9700K also has no HT, and in some games, that SERIOUSLY hurts gaming performance. Lastly, the 9700k is on a completely dead platform, that is not worth it in 2021. This will still be a huge upgrade for you. 4c 4t -> 6c 12t.
