I Need Help Deciding If It's Worth Buying A New Computer

Cosmic64

My budget is $300 and I'm wanting to buy a pre-build without a graphics card. In december 2019 I bought a Dell Optiplex 990 with these specs :

*I5 2400

*DDR3 8GB RAM

*I then added a GT 1030 DDR5 gpu

*10x USB 2.0 ports lol

And here is what I plan on upgrading to if it's worth the upgrade :

*I7 6700

*DDR4 16GB RAM

*I'll use my GT 1030 until I have the money to buy a DDR5 GTX 1650 LP.

*8x USB 3.0 ports and 2x USB 2.0 ports

I plan on emulating Switch games which takes a ton of CPU's so that's why I chose this CPU, I edit videos for my friends so I need at least 8GB of ram, and lastly I have absolutely no Idea which GPU I should choose since I also want to run Doom 2016 above 59 FPS. My current pc runs Doom 2016 around 40fps but my GPU is usually around 80* so I feel like I might need to upgrade. This pre build is a HP EliteDesk G2 800 SFF, I also don't know if I can use a DDR6 GTX 1650 LP if I can please let me know.

Which version of the 990?  The PSU wattage (and potentially format) may matter.  MT has 265W.

Also, you aren't going from DDR3 to 4 without changing a motherboard I don't believe, and the CPUs you stated appear to also use a different socket, so that would also require a new motherboard.

What are  you paying for the i7 6700?  That's not a bad upgrade from an i5 2400, and it'll make everything feel hella snappier.

My only remaining Q:  Does it have an SSD?

Yes the pre-build comes with a 240GB SSD with windows 10 pro on it and it comes with a 500GB HDD. The I7-6700 is in the Pre-Build with the DDR4 16GB Ram and the whole system cost is 300$

You can certainly use the GPU if your motherboard supports it slot wise, and your system has enough power. However, as @PineyCreek stated you won't be throwing an Intel 6700 into a motherboard that old. If you want to go that route, I'd just sell what you currently have without the graphics card, and start over. You can easily find used bundles with those older chips at very reasonable prices.

Nope. Not for that budget. Just buy an old desktop and throw a gpu in when the prices drop. At least an i3 at 4.3ghz

It's not at all hard to get older high end parts like that for cheap. I picked up a motherboard, 16GB RAM and a 6700k for $140.

I have the mini-tower version of the 990. I don't know the model number of this system

Why not just buy a Switch for $300 instead of trying to emulate it on an outdated cpu? If the games are too expensive and that's why you want to emulate, just buy one of the hackable Switch models used.

I have a switch but my switch is patched and my brother won't let me sell it for a unpatched model. The only game I plan on emulating on YUZU is Smash Ultimate

I looked at HP's website and it says the EliteDesk 800 G2 supports this Processor. I don't know much about computer components so I don't know if the motherbored was swapped or something

It'd have to be a half height card. Not sure if those come in the 1650 flavor or not.
