Hello! I've had my Nexus 7 (2013) for a while, and am not sure if I should root it. I don't really need any features I would get from rooting it, but I just like doing things like jailbreaking for the fun of it. Would anyone recommend it? If so, what roms would be good? One of the reasons I might want to is to get access to some of those screen recording programs on the Play Store that you need root access for.

Thanks

-Bacon

You can consult my guide in my SIG. So you actually know what you are doing since jail breaking and rooting are 2 different things. If you know what you are doing, or you have help from someone who knows what they are doing, sure, but if you go downloading root apps from shady sources, just no

Your warranty will be voided, and there is a tiny chance of bricking your phone. Anyways there are many cool things you can do with root, it is not just changing your ROM, you have apps like Adaway, Rootdim, Setcpu, full!screen, titanium backup, and even more...

Main PC:

ASUS F1A55-M LX, AMD A6-3500, (2x2)gb Kingston HyperX Blu DDR3 1600mhz, Seagate Barracuda 500gb 7200rpm,
Corsair CX430M, Cooler Master Elite 343, Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit

Netbook:

Lenovo Ideapad S10-2, Intel Atom N280, (1x1)gb DDR2 667mhz, WD Scorpio Blue 250gb 5400rpm, Zorin OS 9 Lite

I have the Note 3 and I installed CyanogenMod on it, can never go back. The Nexus 7 is nice too, I say go for it and install CyanogenMod!!

I would go the root way. I used to have a Galaxy Note 2 and didn't enjoy touchwiz a whole bunch. So the minute the CyanogenMod Installer came out I jumped on it. It made the experience a lot better. Now I have a LG G2 and recently rooted it and flashed CM 11 on it. It seems like a totally different device, big improvement.

Even for someone like you, who is running stock android I would recommend going for CyanogenMod, it gives you more options on what you can do with your device and the ability to modify the toggles, close all running apps at the same time. I mention those two, because for me, this are the ones that make the most difference in everyday use.

I hope this helps somewhat

If you decide on rooting, go to the Nexus 7 forum on XDA. CyanogenMod is a good starter ROM.

Why root a stock google experience?, the only reason I've ever rooted my devices is so I can get the vanilla google experience

Custom ROMs, Xposed, full control over your device, fixing bugs in Google's ROM, etc.

absolutely right, gotta love xposed, especially with gravity-box and xuimod, however... had i had a vanilla google experience from the very beginning,

and didn't have to resort to rooting and installing a google play edition rom, with of course the added features of said mods, i probably would have been just

as happy with the vanilla experience, the only thing i would honestly miss is being able to change the song by holding either volume up or down
