Hi, new i7 cpu wont work on system?

Go to solution Solved by Skiiwee29,

Z170 is incompatible with the 9700k. You can only use a 6 or 7 series CPUs on a Z170/Z270 board.. you would need a 3 series Motherboard to support a 9 series processor.

Edit: Removed 4 series Boards, thats LGA 1200.. not 1151.

Hi there everybody, I'm searching for help.
I just got my new CPU today specifically: Intel Core i7-9700K Coffee Lake S CPU
However, after installation, i start it up for a second and then it shuts off after .5 seconds at max. I got super worried and started to search everywhere. However, with all the things i have tried it won't work. Note the system worked fine before the CPU, and its the only part i swapped (Will include every spec aspect under). I feel like i have scouted the entire internet, and im afraid i might have gotten a faulty cpu - im really losing hope aha.
- For note; I have gone back to my old cpu now, and are writing this post on it - it works perfectly like usual.
All recommendations are very very appreciated!

My Specs;

Motherboard: MSI Z170A PC Mate

gpu: MSI GTX 980Ti GAMING 6G

ram: G.Skill Ripjaws 2x4GB 2400 MHz DDR4
& 2x corsair
Vengeance 8GB DDR4 2400MHz
psu: corsair cx750 750 watt

Old cpu: Intel Core i5-6600K, 4 x 3.50GHz (3.90Ghz Turbo)
new cpu:
Intel Core i7-9700K Coffee Lake S CPU

The things ive tried;

Swapped out all the ram, and installed them individually,
Pulled out gpu,

Taken out the CMOS battery for 5 min,

checked all the pins & the cpu itself.

I got worried about some therminal paste on the cpu - on the top/side of the metalblock - pic below.
I also got worried about my ram might not be high enough mhz, but i read that it would just slow it down but not disable it like it is. Intel ark
I got worried the motherboard dident support it, however i cant make sense that the cpu wich is lga1151 socket wont work on a motherboard supporting lga1151 - wiki lga1151

And last, i discovered some "discolring" very slightly on the cpu - however i read again that it shouldent be a problem only if its "blow" out or fried looking. - ill try to take a proper pic of it.

Im not the most hw tech savy, i only know very basics, so sorry if i might come off "not pro".
Thanks ALOT in advance - everything and anything greatly appriciated!

Let me know if you need more, ill give all info i can :)

Wrong mobo, you need to buy a Z370 or Z390 motherboard.

Fuck you scalpers, fuck you scammers, fuck all of you jerks that charge way too much to tech-illiterate people.

Unless I say I am speaking from experience or can confirm my expertise, assume it is an educated guess.

Current setup: Ryzen 5 3600, MSI MPG B550, 2x8GB DDR4-3200, RX 5600 XT (+120 core, +320 Mem), 1TB WD SN550, 1TB Team MP33, 2TB Seagate Barracuda Compute, 500GB Samsung 860 Evo, Corsair 4000D Airflow, 650W 80+ Gold. Razer peripherals.

Also have a Alienware Alpha R1: i3-4170T, GTX 860M (≈ a 750 Ti). 2x4GB DDR3L-1600, Crucial MX500

400 is LGA 1200 though, so it will only do 10 or 11

100 - 6th 7th

200 - 6th 7th

300 - 8th 9th

Mobo doesn't support a 9700K.

Why would you get a 9700K in 2021 anyway?

Same as everyone said above. However, if you want an easy way to tell if a CPU is compatible. Go to the manufacturer's page for the motherboard. Click on Support, Compatibility, CPU Support, or CPU QVL. It'll list all the CPUs that are tested and confirmed working with a given motherboard.

Here's the one for your Z170A

https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/support/Z170A-PC-MATE#support-cpu

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

I mean if it worked on 1151 on a Z170, I would if the price was right. Like back during BF when they were $199. They prob. won't get that cheap again, though, outside of second hand.

There are ways to unofficially do this, but IDK how well it works.

I was looking for a realtively cheap upgrade bc i felt like it was time - and i need more power for more multitasking and heavy programs. I spent around 300 usd on the cpu - I dont know if prices vary from country.

Im willing to spend around 170 (theres a decent wiggle room) more to make the cpu work on my system if possible

Are you in USA or a different country? Prices will vary by country due to import taxes, VAT, etc.
