I have been messing around w/ the AMD Overdrive thing, my CPU seems to crash at 4.8GHz under a stress test. I backed it down to 4.5GHz. Is this a stable OC or should I back it down more/bump it up farther.

This is my first time overclocking so any input will help.

You need to run a test like Prime 95 or Furmark for a few hours.

Having it not crash immediately doesn't mean it's stable.

I am running the amd one that is built into the overdrive thingy. It is set for 7 hours. So far I feel like I am doing this correctly, but I am not sure...

EDIT: I can run Prime 95 once it is done. Once I figure out how to work it...

Oh......

7 hours, that's pretty good, I would still try Prime 95 or FurMark.

Some Overclocks crash with certain programs, some don't.

Ok. I will run Prime 95 and Furmark and see if it crashes. I will run them at 1-2 hours probably.

I overclocked my friends 8350 on the AMD Overdrive and it got up to 4.6GHz and backed to 4.5GHz, he has since been rendering lots and has been running fine. I guess just check your temps and do a little bit of other stress testing as well.

Temps are (at 4.8GHz) 30 C last I checked. This is also under load. I am running a H100, so temps are not really a problem that I can see. I will post a screen shot of were it is at when I get up in the morning.

So I backed it down to 4.0 because I got a hardware problem. Also, The only thing I have messed with is the CPU voltage and the Clock speed. Is there anything else I should do also?

Need details.

Dont use AMD Overdrive. Use the bios to OC and Prime95 to stability test.

how? I am not that smart atm and this is the first time I am OCing.

Anyways... Here is what I had it at: Turbo off, 22.5x Multiplier(Clock of 4.5GHz), CPU Voltage 1.3625

For the clock of 4.8GHz, it was 24x multiplier and same voltage.

This is what I changed. Should I pump more voltage or something else?

Yes you need more voltage with both in order for it to run properly.

I'd start 1.425 volts for 4.5Ghz and go up. 4.7-4.9 is the roll of the dice. This could take 1.45-1.515 volts to be stable.

I am trying 4.5@ 1.425 volts. Testing it with the AMD overdrive one for 30 minutes then I will test it with the Prime 95 for 3-5 hours.

So this is my stable OC(that I have tried with AMD Over Drive)

Now, the BIOS is a different language to me. Does the number next to the thing override the previous clock speed and voltage, or does it add on?

I used Overdrive once to overclock my 8320 but it ended up overclocking the CPU way past stability so I recommend that you avoid using it completely.
The best possible way to test stability that I've personally tried is to use Prime95 blend test, which tends to test out both your CPU & RAM.
Usually if you have not applied enough voltage the first thing to become unstable is your integrated memory controller which in turn makes your RAM unstable.
So just start the prime95 blend test and look out for temperatures, if they stay below 61c and no errors occur during the test then you're golden.

Avoid AMD Overdive. If you want to oc within OS, I recommend  reading this post:
