My first NAS

Hey guys I wanted to make my first home NAS for storing movies, music, games, documents, backups, etc. The very basic stuff I wanted it to have 4TB so I linked below what I think is the best, as far as the actual NAS system what is the cheapest that could do what I want below. Thanks so much for any help!

What I want:

1. Back up large files fairly quickly (why I wanted 7200RPM)

2. View images/videos/files from phone, laptop, computer

3. Reliable, for the backups

4. At least 2 hard drive slots

5. no budget, just as long as it can do those things

HDD I think I want: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084ZV8YW8?tag=5thgeekws-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1&keywords=7200 rpm hard drive

P.S. I know next to nothing about servers and NAS all I know is how to build a computer so any tips are welcome aswell, Thanks again!

Have you thought about getting a used Optiplex or similar and then just running Unraid?

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Why do you want this drive? Id get the non pro version, you won't need the extra speed. If you want cheaper drives shuck the 8tb external drives

Your gonna be network limited, so drive rpm won't matter

Whats your total budget?

Id probalby just get a cheap/used desktop.

Ya i dont know how it works so does it not matter if tis 5400 rpm because of the network or is it still worth it to do 7200 i dont know much about this stuff, and i dont have a budget i just want to know whats the cost to do the things i wanted to for the cheapiest

for a simple home usage scenario, id recommend you to get a consumer grade nas,  since everything beyond that you wont really have a use for.

they are pretty cheap, around 100-200€ like a synology 216 or anything like that with 2 bays.

reason for consumer nas: convenience, most of the tools youll need are already there

Im assuming this is over a gigabit network right?

Then your always network limited?

If you want something simple, id just get a premade nas from synology or the like.

If you want diy, id go with a i3 10100, 16gb of ram, unraid, and some cheapish nas drives(or shucked if you want even cheaper.

no, it's not, especially if you have only 1gbps internet.

where and how much can you find a old one for, and would it be better than something like this?

eBay, usually their like $60 and not very much stuff needs to be done to fix them up. it's harder, but much cheaper.

What model do you have?

Almost all home networks are gigabit max. Wifi is rated with much higher speeds, but its impossible to hit those speeds.

really depends on your wifi setup. you can technically get 2+ gbit, but something like 500mbit is pretty common

Id stay awawy from those as there single drive bay only.

Id just get a basic synology, then software comes included and works well.

Why stay away?
