Problem - Ethernet speed locked at 100Mb/s

Go to solution Solved by Karlos10pl,

Okay guys. Problem solved. Thank you for your help.

Turns out that despite working on 1Gbps with other PC it was the cable that caused the issue. 🙃 I connected the PC by a brand new one and it solved the issue.

Thank you once again for help. Best community ever. 💪

Hi guys. I am asking for your help.

I have a problem with my Internet connection. Despite having 300Mb/s Internet I only get below 100Mb/s on my PC. I know for a fact that this is a problem with this PC, because others do not experience the same issue.
I use cat.5e cable, which I tested with another PC and had no problems. The cable is connected directly to the ISP provided router/modem.

Widnows10, all drivers and BIOS are up to date as of 14 March 2021.
Windows shows it as 100/100 (Mbps), I even tried to force it to 1 Gigabit but it wouldn't work.

PC Specs:
Motherboard: MSI MPG Z390 Gaming Plus
CPU: Intel Core i5 8400
RAM:16GB (2x8GB)  HyperX Predator RGB 3200MHz CL16
GPU: nVidia RTX 3070 MSI Suprim
PSU: be quiet! System Power 9 600W 80 Plus Bronze
OS storage: GOODRAM 256GB 2,5" SATA SSD CX400

OS Name:                   Microsoft Windows 10 Enterprise
OS Version:                10.0.19042 N/A Build 19042

Built in network card

Intel(R) Ethernet Connection (7) I219-V

Driver version: 12.19.0.16
Intel Network Driver: 25.4.0.6

Any ideas what is causing the problem?

Thanks for the help.

Edit: As this may be important - the modem/router is: Technicolor CGA2121

Can you temporarily boot another OS to help determine weather we're dealing with an OS issue or a hardware issue?

Did you actually install the LAN drivers?

On the MSi site, the LAN drivers are version 25.4.0.6; nowhere does it has 12.19.0.16.

For anyone else coming to this thread, I can confirm that the onboard LAN for that mobo supports 1Gbps. That was my first thought, so I figured I should rule it out.

that number seems oddly suspicious, Id look into your router whether there is bandwith limitation for specific devices set by someone 🙂

Also check the connection speeds on the router / modem, too.

Tbh I do not have the acces to the router/modem settings. I only have acces to it through requests to my ISP. Annoying as hell and tech support is out of work already, so I can check tommorow. (I am from Poland so I am in a different time zone),

yes. definetly, some routers still offer 1000/100mbit ethernet ports, and you can still choose whether the clients should get fast ethernet or gigabit.

good point

How old is the router. I can't imagine anything remotely recent only having 100Mbps links, but if it's quite old it's possible.

Yeah. That's not old enough. It could be manually set to 100Mbps, but it's got to at least support 1Gbps.

Oh? It's not a Windows issue for once! :old-grin:

If you've verified that other clients get Gigabit (or the full 300mbps) from this same Ethernet cable & router port what is the history of this system? It could be a NIC issue.

Well.... TBH the other laptop with Windows I connected didn't get the full 300Mb/s either, it got about to 200 Mb/s, but my MacBook gets full 300Mb/s on WiFi soooo....

I bought all the parts brand new at a big PC Parts retailer in Poland. Put it toghether myslef. It originaly had 1060 6Gb in it, I switched to the 3070 few months ago, and the problems with the Ethernet started somwhere around that time. I was busy with my Uni stuff so I got to it now. No problems with it untill that.

The question here right now is why is Windows & Ubuntu auto-negotiating the link down to 10/100mbps and not 10/100/1000mbps? If you got clients to go over 100mbps on this connection that still brings your motherboard into question given the modem/router combo uses Gigabit Ethernet ports.

I see your CPU came out in 2017. So your motherboard is a couple years old at least no?

I think the router is auto detecting it as 100Mb connection?

Was not able to find much info, but I'm assuming you should be able to SET the ports to be 10/100/1000 Mb within the router's settings.

I only have access to it through my ISP tech support. (Yes it is a pain 🙃) The tech support is out of work now, it is after midnight here in Poland. I will check on it tommorow. Thank you!
