SOLVED -Ryzen Motherboard did die -CPU survived.

I built a system a while back: Using ASUS X570 Prime-P, AMD Ryzen 3600 and its default heatsink and gave it to my brother -since I now looking toward 5800X.

 

Anyway to the point:

He didn't like the high heat he was getting with the default heatsink and tried to dissemble it -I tried to explain it -should have welded the system SHUT!

He ended up yanking the heatsink right out of the socket with the CPU still attached while the locking arm on the side of the CPU slot in the motherboard was down.

I looked at the CPU and it had bent pins and some thermal paste on it as well as the CPU motherboard socket.

I did my best to clean and realign all the pins and cleaned the motherboard socket out and tried re-slotting everything.

 

But at power on with CPU reinstalled -the motherboard still lights up, chipset fan spins, GPU 1050ti fans spinning, and Motherboard LED lights up.

No Motherboard sound error but only black screen -no UEFI BIOS prompt or message -no error messages -absolutely nothing.

Tried clearing the CMOS but still nothing,

I believe my brother killed the CPU and may have killed the motherboard.

I also just I took the GPU to my other system and it would not register any video now when it did before.

 

Am I correct in the assumption the CPU, GPU and Motherboard are dead?

Even though the motherboard still runs?

Is the motherboard basically a garbage disposal: put good parts in and get destroyed?

Honestly, what your brother did was actually quite normal for AMD CPUs as odd as it sounds. That said, I would take the CPU out again and double and triple check that there are no other pins bent and/or missing.

Yes.

All pins are there and straightened.

It's a common *mistake* if that's what you mean, but it's anything but "normal". This doesn't really happen with Intel (or AMD Threadripper for that matter) because they are land grid array (LGA) and thus have a full chip retention bracket, versus just the arm that locks the pins. However, any non-novice knows to twist the cooler gently to loosen the paste before just ripping it off the chip.

The CPU is surely dead, but the mobo may still be fine. I'd try a different CPU in it first to see if it will work with that. If you don't have an extra CPU to try, a computer repair shop should be able to test the board for you for a nominal fee, if not just for free.

Nah. His brother just yeeted the whole darn cooler across the room... I cannot answer this. Did he at least unplug the PC before he did that?

The nearest repair place is nearly 200 miles away from here.

I'm trying hard not to laugh, because I know this is an awful, frustrating situation for the OP, but I did have this mental image of Godzilla in Tokyo.

Well, yeah, if you have another CPU to try. Repair shop was the option if you didn't, as they can just pop in something they have on hand.

If the pins are all intact, no tearing or braking, i'm sure the cpu is not dead.

Rebend it just enough to slot it in.

Most likely you still have some paste not cleaned.

I advice to spray it with IPA and let it dry, use clean toothbrush on the pins.

Already did that to the CPU and it will reslot in.

Just nothing at boot.

It maybe isn't the CPU....

Can see down in the socket there may be some thermal paste down in the motherboard CPU socket...

Is it possible to disasemble the CPU socket and clean it out?

Yeah, unfortunately. I mean there's things to check to ensure a mobo works besides just recognizing the CPU, but you can't tell anything without a CPU. It's just a lifeless hunk of copper and resin.

Would it be better to use a fanned paintbrush with soft unused threads? A toothbrush may be too hard imo. Or compressed air if the OP has access to it.

Yeah it's possible to remove the socket cover.

This guy done it in AM3, i cannot find videos for AM4, but it is possible, and probably using the same method.

After you remove the cover, clean the paste gently, i suggest using a contact cleaner which is more potent than IPA.

Paintbrush or Compressed air sounds like a good idea.

Gave him an old Athlon II x2 270 Regor processor to use in an old AM3 system.

So he has something at least.

Yes, it's in some foreign language but it's a very good video, and the only AM4 repair I've seen

I don't live in the US. WD has a contact cleaner, try that.

Many contact cleaner is basically IPA + a little solvent.

I literally searched how to remove amd am4 socket and that was the first video and said eh it's good enuf
