SOLVED -Ryzen Motherboard did die -CPU survived.

Go to solution Solved by kingknightrider,

OK REVISE TIME:

Motherboard did indeed croak.

1 RAM chip, RX 550 and the 1050 ti didn't make it either.

CPU survived.

Had to get an ASROCK B450 to check this.

I built a system a while back: Using ASUS X570 Prime-P, AMD Ryzen 3600 and its default heatsink and gave it to my brother -since I now looking toward 5800X.

Anyway to the point:

He didn't like the high heat he was getting with the default heatsink and tried to dissemble it -I tried to explain it -should have welded the system SHUT!

He ended up yanking the heatsink right out of the socket with the CPU still attached while the locking arm on the side of the CPU slot in the motherboard was down.

I looked at the CPU and it had bent pins and some thermal paste on it as well as the CPU motherboard socket.

I did my best to clean and realign all the pins and cleaned the motherboard socket out and tried re-slotting everything.

But at power on with CPU reinstalled -the motherboard still lights up, chipset fan spins, GPU 1050ti fans spinning, and Motherboard LED lights up.

No Motherboard sound error but only black screen -no UEFI BIOS prompt or message -no error messages -absolutely nothing.

Tried clearing the CMOS but still nothing,

I believe my brother killed the CPU and may have killed the motherboard.

I also just I took the GPU to my other system and it would not register any video now when it did before.

Am I correct in the assumption the CPU, GPU and Motherboard are dead?

Even though the motherboard still runs?

Is the motherboard basically a garbage disposal: put good parts in and get destroyed?

I think it just needs proper CPU and ram seating.

And check if ur keyboard and are mouse getting power.

If they are not CPU needs to be reseated.

Ok here are the results:

Used the razor blade to straighten 2 pins missed before on cpu.

Cleaned the chip and the socket.

Let dry for 24 hours.

Reinserted CPU into socket.

Tried powering on with HDMI onboard video and the mouse lit up NOT the keyboard.

No further response.

So put in backup-backup graphics card=RX550

Reset CMOS

Keyboard and mouse responded and lit up.

Got a three second video response:

screen.jpg.e940aca4eaaeeb75920551e17276e3b1.jpg

Most likely Bios graphics display lockup.

BIOS text becomes an endless graphics block.

Checked the monitor with another system and its fine so know it was not monitor related.

After that the system shut down on its own.

No warning messages or beeps.

Reset CMOS

Tried turning it on again.

The system started.

However...

The GPU fans started and stopped and never started again.

The chipset fan no longer spins but still get the LED light.

After 30 seconds the system self powered down and would not restart or reboot.

Removed the fan connections from motherboard.

And the system powered on once more but no keyboard or mouse light up response but system stalls.

Checked with another PSU to rule that out.

Same result -nothing unless fan headers removed and would power on but system stalls.

Tried the GPU in another system and it is now DOA.

Because I did at one time get a response from the CPU but the motherboard killed the GPU could the CPU be good or did the motherboard just kill everything?

Yeah, unfortunately. I mean there's things to check to ensure a mobo works besides just recognizing the CPU, but you can't tell anything without a CPU. It's just a lifeless hunk of copper and resin.

Yeah it's possible to remove the socket cover.

This guy done it in AM3, i cannot find videos for AM4, but it is possible, and probably using the same method.

After you remove the cover, clean the paste gently, i suggest using a contact cleaner which is more potent than IPA.

Just for further info:

Tried without heatsink- but 120 fan right on it and Processor didn't get hot at all with these 45 second up times.

An egg would freeze.

Also tried PSU in another system and its working without issue.

Okay, okay.

Just the the keyboard (disconnect all connected devices to it)

Disconnect the HDD or any other storage

We need only RAM, CPU, GPU, PSU and keyboard.

Oh the one thing

where u said mouse was getting light but not keyboard I guess it means ram needs to be reseated (best way to fix it imo, telling from my experience).

Keep the motherboard/pc case horizontally if u haven't done it yet.(Yes even many times this helped 🤦.)

Yes sometimes you just need mounting pressure. (I should have tried this more often, yeah still don't push too hard tho, don't use ur hand to push it, u can use stock cooler or something else.i would recommend stock cooler)

Connect CPU fan only (leave the other fans out of this, well mine has only CPU fan)

There would be small button cell remove it and put it back after minute or two.

(-nv inside, +ve outside)

Check if the power button and it's rainbow wires are connected correctly (if there's no start button on motherboard and u r using case Button to start)

Another way to clear CMOS is Screwdriver tip method, in powered off state u connect the tips of jumper using screwdriver or it's tip for solid one minute at least!

(You will need to find where ur jumper is located at on the motherboard.)

-------------

Now then pc/motherboard is now placed horizontally.

Shutdown, power down and unplug PSU/PC from wall.

Then do below steps

00) reset the jumper as told above

0) this might sound weird but disconnect power cord from PSU too.

1) remove the button cell

2) take out the ram and gpu

3) other than keyboard disconnect everything.

4) disconnect all storage devices

4.1) is ur CPU socket clean? (Just saying)

5) get the CPU out then reseat it, (u can do very tiny push too. I would still recommend stock cooler)

6) after reseating put the ram back

(Don't need to push it down too hard just until click sound, yeah pushing down too hard on ram also made my computer not work then reseated in same slot it worked and this is has happened many times)

I would recommend going with only one stick of ram,use working stick of ram btw.

7) put the GPU back and the button cell

(Rough surface in and smooth shiny surface out, that is negative in and positive out)

8) reconnect the power cable to PSU reconnect the hdmi/display cable to GPU and monitor except

(Connect monitor's end to Gpu and GPU's end to monitor.)

9) connect the PSU cable to wall start and wait and see.

If it works it works

If it doesn't

Use the other ram slots while keeping the GPU in same slot.

After trying all ram slots,

Change the GPU slot (I am presuming ur board has two PCIe slots).

And then try all ram slots.

Keep ur mind at peace and try

and try carefully, don't be hasty at all.

If it works that's good u will be greeted by bios and then shut it down connect storage device and mouse (but before that disconnect the plug from wall!!!).

If this doesn't work I am out of solutions, sorry bruh.

- thank you.

Sorry for the delay.

Gave up and took the weekend off.

Came back to it today and the results:

Stock fans in the system?

If the stock fans were put to the motherboard the system would not turn on.

Put them straight off the PSU and the fans would run.

The motherboard would also "try" to run if fans were connected to the PSU.

However it would be just a continuous black screen but no POST -even after 5 minutes of waiting.

So know at least the PSU is good enough to handle the Fans -4 of them CPU included.

Motherboard can't seem to handle even one fan.

Tried the CPU stock fan only:

Put the stock fan for the CPU connected to the motherboard it would not run.

Even if I tried different Fan headers.

Put CPU fan to the PSU and the motherboard would do this endless black screen run thing again.

In any case the motherboard would only show the chipset LED -its fan -no matter the condition and it would not run.

Now neither the chipset fan or its LED runs.

And anytime it tried to run -the keyboard -a lit one -would -under normal circumstances light up and go out during boot.

These times however it never even lit up.

While the mouse stayed constantly lit -while it never lit up under normal loading.

Tried different USB slots with only keyboard attached and way back during the time I got the three second response did the keyboard light up.

It however has never lit up again.

Had to check it in another system to makes sure the keyboard was still good.

The same with the mouse but the reverse.

Though these runs just indicate the keyboard, mouse and stock fans and their lights are good.

So I will leave him with a AMD Athalon IIx2 270 Regor system bolted and duct-taped shut beyond anyone's meticulous nature to undo.

Not to mention that all this trial and error has now destroyed yet another graphics card -the 1050ti -no longer works.

Since everything he touched is likely to be junk...

I guess it is time to recycle.

I knew I wasn't the only one who stored dead hardware.

Yes -though its a 900W PSU so I am sure its still got some kick left in its life.

Though also keeping an eye on its kinda of hard to do from 200+ miles away...

And it is the PSU now powering the Athlon IIx2 270 and so far from what I have been told works fine.

And he is content to at least have something...

He has a version of aspergers syndrome of autism -gets very angry and aggressive.

Playing video games relaxes him -so had to leave him with something.

After all he is my younger brother.

I have tried to teach him about computers but he doesn't have the attention span or patience for it.

I guess as this proves it.

RIP RYZEN 3600... -well maybe it still lives but the motherboard just GOODBYE!

Never going ASUS motherboards with RYZEN again.

Yes -though its a 900W PSU so I am sure its still got some kick left in its life.

Though also keeping an eye on its kinda of hard to do from 200+ miles away...

And it is the PSU now powering the Athlon IIx2 270 and so far from what I have been told works fine.

i see.

And he is content to at least have something...

He has a version of aspergers syndrome of autism -gets very angry and aggressive.

Playing video games relaxes him -so had to leave him with something.

i see, maybe try getting him,or for family, a pet. (a kitten/a puppy and name it.)

Tell him i said Hi.
(i went from shut-in introvert to an ambivert.)

I have tried to teach him about computers but he doesn't have the attention span or patience for it.

You can watch electroboom with him. (he has got masters degree in electrical engineering btw.
and emphasis on "with him")

1) sample videos (this guy made me learn/get more and more into electronics and electrical engineering turns out more practical info is what i needed about what i was learning...)

Yeah... he would like the humor of a guy blowing himself apart problem is....

I am kinda of afraid he would actually try to do these things and burn down the house.

I pray for the day when he turns 18 and can leave home -that he doesn't.
