So, as part of a theme change and upgrade I'll be doing over Spring and Summer, I've had to source a Z77 Sabertooth to paint white. The only one I came across was part of a bundle with an i7 3770K, and 16GB of Corsair Vengeance memory - used. (Don't worry, it was a legitimate, experienced eBayer, the parts are around 12 months old, I have the receipts)

I managed get all of it for £200...that's a good deal, in case you were wondering. Used i7's regularly go for around £190 on eBay on their own...

Anyway, I was thinking, now that I have 2 3770K's, is it worth de-lidding whichever turns out to be the better performer/outputs the most heat? I have insurance in the form of a second i7...if I fail it just means that I can't sell it, which, while not a big deal, is money that would have gone into a Phanteks Enthoo Primo/Luxe, Water cooling, and a GTX 880 (when it comes out).

I wouldn't. But I suggest you always de-lid cans, ice cream tubs and other lidded items.

Life is pain. Anyone who says any different is either selling something or the government.

See how they clock first, and if they both suck don't bother. If one will do like 4.9-5ghz with the extra few degrees of headroom then do it.

The minimal performance gain isn't worth the risk.

Also if you delid performance goes down over time and you have to keep changing the thermal compond, atleast I remember I read that somewhere.

It's Ivy. The thermal compound under thr ihs is better than maxwell. -snip-

You mean Haswell right because I don't remember any "Maxwell" GPU's from Intel  :P I do understand the confusion between both names because they are used a lot lately  ;)

Back on topic, I don't recommend de-lid a CPU if you didn't try it on (dead) older CPU's, otherwise you have a chance to break stuff.

I think you guys are right, I can already comfortably get 4.8 GHz on my 3770k so clocking it that little bit higher isn't worth it.

I would totally just do it. You have a second one, and if you're feeling confident, then why not? It'll drop temps significantly and should allow a better OC.
