I recently updated the bios on my motherboard (msi b550 gaming plus), and the performance on my cpu (ryzen 7 3700x) improved, which was listed in the update notes.

Not a huge amount, from just under 12,000 multicore in cinebench r23 to about 12,600, but noticible nonetheless.

How does that even work? An update to one component making another faster?

They changed some default value. Might be like a BCLK boost from 100Mhz to 100,5Mhz. Or something like that. Longer turbo boost, more power budget.

If you want to compare performance like for like you might want to set as much as possible manually. Also o Micro-Code update can bring improvements but not usually on this level.

It might be a default value, or it might be like some gpu driver updates, just uses more optimized code for some programs

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

Without knowing the settings before and after, hard to say. Also could be something in a way PBO works.
