4TB HDD has the best price/capacity ratio?

Chiyawa

Today I looked at some desktop 3.5 inch HDD, and I found that, at least from my local store, 4TB HDD has the best price/capacity. For example, 4TB Western Digital Blue is selling at RM (Malaysian currency) of 439 whereas 6TB is selling at RM 729. That seems to be a huge gap from 4TB to 6TB. If you divided the price to their respective capacity, the 4TB cost about RM109.75 per 1TB where as for 6TB cost RM121.50 per 1TB.

Looking at other brand and models (such as Western Digital Red and Purple, Seagate SkyHawk, even Toshiba P and X series HDD), it seems this is the trend. The cost per capacity ratio also increase as the capacity went up. This ratio also applies for HDD less than 4TB (1TB, 2TB, and 3TB). 1TB HDD has the worst cost to capacity ratio, as they are the highest in their respective brand and model.

Below is the graph I made.

If you live in Malaysia, it seems 4TB HDD gives you the best bang for your bucks.

So, what about your own country? Does 4TB HDD gives the best price vs. capacity ratio?

Yeah 4TB are the best ratio for now, with price as low as $80, only 20% more than 2TB.

4TB HDD's here (the Netherlands, West Europe) also have the best price/capacity.

3TB and 2TB are not much cheaper, while 6TB+ becomes a lot more expensive.

One thing to consider though, is that some of these drives are either SMR or NAS drives, which for a regular desktop drive does not leave a lot of options.

Yes. I know Toshiba X series HDD are all CMR to my believe. WD Blue, the model ends with RZ is CMR, while model ends with AZ is SMR. SMR generally has a large cache (256MB).
