So I've decided to start ripping all of my Blu-Rays and am currently using my Person PC as my PLEX server but I can't keep this on 24/7 like I'd ideally want. So I'm looking into getting a server which would be able to stream 1080P full quality Blu-Ray rips to likely at max 6 or 7 people at once though this would be rare as it would only happen when I convince my friends to do a watch party of something. So I was wondering for around $400 what could be some options I have for everything but storage which ideally could be upgraded when needed.

PS: Would this case+power supply combo be a good jumping off point? LINK

If there's no rescaling involved, any nas with atom / dual core cpu NAS enclosure can do it.

I suggest getting a cheap x79 / x99 in aliexpress, for $150 you can get a xeon + mb + ram combo.

If you need rescaling add a cheap gpu like gtx1050.

Is there any specific combo listings you'd reccomend?

I think even a 780 or 970 should be enough for rescaling. maybe as low 770

if you you have a 4k TV for your self add a nvidia shield between your server and TV which will allow you to upscale 1080p to 4k decently.

There's plenty of options, but i suggest Huananzhi motherboards.

For the cpu get the lowest TDP if possible.

There's a dedicated forum for this (russian), go to overclocker.ru, they review most chinese boards extensively.

Which one do you think would be a better value OPTION1 or OPTION2 .For software I'll likely be using FreeNAS if I do go with this route and starting with around 8 TBs of Storage if that matters.

The first option too much powaah, better for desktop.

The second option is much suitable for nas. But i suggest get one with ECC ram, since freenas recommends it.

Read the threads before buying one, since these motherboards model aren't fixed, many have random chipsets.

Older models are recommended, since it's probably already tested by the forum for durability.

Doesn't matter the drive capacity, i suggest getting one with the most sata port available. M.2 port is nice to have for caching.

true true but at this point up front cost is just as bad as the cost of power. In my area I got people selling gtx 1050 for almost $200 us. so no matter what kinda screwed on the $. just trying to say to get what ever the best deal is upfront. plus you could always under volt a card.

Forgot to add that I plan on having a 240GB SSD Cache. Unless that wouldn't be a good idea

caching wouldn't hurt anything. but I agree with @SupaKomputayou can get a combo x79 with 16gb ram and a e5 2470 for like 150 to 170 us $ on Ebay or ali.

Actually I just found an I5-4690K on a Gigabyte Z97X-SOC with 16 GB of RAM for $200 do you all think that would be good for a NAS starting out?

EDIT: Looked Closer it's a 2x8 config of RAM

if your more comfortable with something like this that is ok too

Ok well I decided to look on eBay and found a ASUS Sabertooth X79 TUF that's currently being bid on if I'm able to get that for less than $100 if I were to buy E5-2650 v2 for $40 and then spending like $30 on DDR3. Would that be a good deal?

Found another idea on Craigslist someone is selling a Dell R710 X5570 for $100 no RAM or HDD but can add RAM for a little extra so let's say $150 how good would that be? According to cnet that model has an Intel Xenon X5570

Terrible on the noise and power consumption front.

theyre less than 25W idle? even less if you have a 0dB fan card, or a card you can load a 0dB bios onto then it should be under 15W idle.

But yeah there are better cards for this than the GTX970 anyway, a GTX960 is better with the newer architecture; or better still a GTX1030
