Best GPU for Emulation?

Budget (including currency): $50-100 (if this is possible)

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Dolphin Emulator (Gamecube and Wii games)

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Dell Optiplex 3020 SFF with i5 4590 (4c 4t @3.7 Ghz), 8 GB DDR3

The GPU needs to be single slot and small form factor. This is more for the future since the GPU market is crazy right now. Would something like a GT 1030 suffice?

Unfortunately the best single slow, low profile graphics card is indeed the GT 1030. Sufficient for dolphin, but the price is not so great right now. If you do manage to find one in your budget it would be the best candidate performance wise.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Yeston makes a single slot low profile RX 550 which may be a good choice.

if you need more performance than that, the next step are Radeon Pro WX4100/4200’s

Well in my area you can find the 1030 for 60-70€, I would definitely try to check the used market.

Some low profile 750 ti's existed.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

GT 1030 is an ok choice, but there's also the RX 560/460 and RX 550 which are worth considering, the 560/460 being faster than the 1030, but may also cost more.

Thanks for the suggestions! I think I'll give one of the AMD GPU's a try (since I'm also interested in messing around with Linux gaming), and if I can't find one I'll go for the 1030.

  • 1 month later...

i'm curious, is running emulators (dolphin, mame, nes.....etc) more dependent of the gpu or cpu?

thanks.
