Threadripper Build - Totally not working and confused

Hi there folks,

I'm an animator for a YouTube channel and deadlines are coming up on me quick. I'm totally stumped as to why my new build isn't preforming well and crashing.

Here's the specs:

CPU: AMD Threadripper 2950x 16 Core

MoBo: x399 Taichi (Bios v3.9)

RAM: 64GB  G.SKILL TridentZ Series 3200mhz (8GBx8)

GPU: RTX 3090 Founders Edition

PSU:  CORSAIR - RM Series 750W

Storage: 2x M.2 1TB SSD's

The problem:

I edit/render in Adobe After after effects. Renders (with no OC of any type) can take over 20-40 hours for a moderately complex video. I've rendered identical projects faster on my previous build with a Ryzen 5 3600.

So in efforts to speed up renders I looked to overclock - I initially tried the XMP 2.0 profile without any additional tweaks, and if I was even able to boot up the PC would BSOD when a render began. I thought maybe it was a voltage issue, so I went back, set my RAM speed to 3200mhz, and voltage to OC Mode and the PC wont boot. I tried some manual OC with Ryzen Master with essentially little to no difference in performance.

Currently im running with no OC at all, and it says my RAM is at 1064mhz... I'm by no means an expert at this, but my gut tells me that's not right.

Anyone, help plz?

Is it hard crashing? 354 Watts as reported by GamersNexus on the 3090 + 383 on the 2950x= 737 Watts. That's not much headroom for anything else running on your computer.

If you're getting that from Task manager, it doesn't report DDR. DDR is Double Data Rate. Task Manager reports Single Data Rate. 1064*2= 2128Mhz. This is quite possibly due to low power.

I've never messed with Threadripper, but it seems like a PSU issue.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

It's only Blue Screened or Threw an error at startup, no hard crashes.

I'm not sure it's the PSU. I just upgraded my GPU this week, previously I had a GTX 1660 Super and had the same issues. 😞

You're not going to have a good time with 8 sticks and 3200 on a 2950X with a weak integrated memory controller. Try backing down to XMP w/ 2933 as opposed to 3200. That's how I ran my 2950X w/ 8 sticks.

Earlier when I tested XMP 2.0, I set the RAM speed several times trying to get it to boot. Even set it lower than 2300mhz and it still wouldn't boot. I had to completely disable all OC to get it to boot.

What happens if you only populate 4 of the sticks?

Back on with 32GB ram (8x4). XMP 2.0 is loaded in Bios for 3200mhz RAM Speeds. CPU-Z is showing RAM frequency at 1600mhz.

So you're running @ 3200 (Double Data Rate)

Means the IMC in  your CPU is pretty weak.

With 8 stick you might have to back down to 2666.

Only in certain windows versions... mine happily reports 3200..

But anyways

I totally agree... this psu is hopelessly under dimensioned for this system.

Op ,long story short,  you're gonna need to invest in a really beefy / high end like 1000w psu

I suggest running at default "suggested" speed of Ryzen 2nd gen, which is 2993 or 2666.

Use less ram module if you don't use that much memory. Try 6 modules.

You won't get a huge result going for 3200, so you won't loose much.

PSU might not be enough for TR + 3090.
