Graphics card and Mobo issues

OddityZero

So during the summer of quarantine, my graphics card shut down. I was sitting in discord when I heard 2 clicks and the screen went black along with all of the fans etc. I sent it in to Zotac, and it came back working. Plugged it in and all was fine for 3 months before the same thing happened again. At the time, the stars aligned and all of a sudden I had a brand new RTX 3070 to plug in. So I did, to no avail. The exact same symptoms. One thing to mention is that when the cards "died", the computer would boot without them. I don't have an igpu so I can't check, but all the fans and lights turn on when they're not plugged in. With the GPU, the ram lights up but none of the fans or other lights. I'm unsure of the problem and I don't want to blame my brand new gpu for the issue, because they're so difficult to get right now. Just today, as I was plugging it in to check whether the issue had changed, I took out the gpu and sparks flew from the lower right portion of the motherboard. It's a wire heavy area, but idk anymore.

Oh, you're gonna have to put those sparks back in.  Once it releases all the sparks it probably won't work.

You need to replace your mobo and do some cable management.

my theory is that there's some sort of driver incompatibility, but im not nearly qualified enough to be making that sort of diagnosis

are you sure it's a motherboard problem?

if sparks flew out, the motherboard has a hardware fault.

You'll have to replace it.

Thanks for the reply! Can you be sure that it was a motherboard issue and the graphics card is not to blame?

Well, you mentioned that it was in a wire-heavy area.

What most likely happened is some pins shorted that shouldn't have.

It could also be a GPU fault, but if the motherboard lets out sparks, time for a new motherboard.

If you can post a picture of the affected area that might help.  It could be just bad cables or connectors. Or it could be a blown component on the mobo.

My suggestion would be to pull it apart and check for cables or connectors that are scorched and then try without the riser.

Nothing is jumping out at me except the use of the riser and the large bundle of wires, something could have chafed through.
