Hey guys,

I wanted to install  a new Program, but it said, that there is not enough storage. I wonderd, because I switched to a nwe SSD recently and did not install much yet. So I looked up and Windows reported that only 11,4Gb are left. This cannot be true. So I marked all folders in the Partition (including the hidden ones) and clicked on Properties. There Windows reports that only about 30Gb are used. I did a cleaning of the drive and restarted multiple times, but nothing changed. How is this possible?

Can somebody help me?

I am from Germany so sorry for bad English.

When something should be translated, then let me know.

Can you try looking at the disk with something like https://www.hdgraph.com/

This is better to see e.g. hidden files and the like.

~edit: If possible also have a look into disk management, to see if there are maybe other partitions using up space.

Thanks to both of you.

@manikyath: The cleaning only found a few megabytes.

@Eigenvektor: HDGraph found about 95Gb of "unknown data"

Any suggestions what I can do now?

Transfer the important files away, because it looks like it's time to reinstall windows.

You could try running HDGraph as an administrator, this should hopefully allow it to access those "unknown files" and give you more information what those are.

It could be something simple like system restore points or even the recycle bin that you might be able to clean up.

My first thought is a counterfeit, (though likely not the best one)  this was a problem with SD cards for some time, and an SSD in some ways isn’t all that different from an SD cards. They would be marked as larger than they actually were and simply rewrote data onto the limited space.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

I actually have the same issue but windows does cache stuff and install updates (you can clean most stuff) some programs also forces to install on the C drive

Reminder⚠️

I'm just speaking from experience so what I say may not work 100%

Please try searching up the answer before you post here but I am always glad to help

Thanks to all of you for your support!

Today I found out that the Microsoft Store installed a game onto the C: Drive instead of my E: Drive. The Installation was probably not finished and therefore it identified itself as unknown. I deinstalled it and now everything is fine!

This is actually useful in case that comes up again.

This actually happens with a lot of new games now -- personally noticed this with Warzone, CoD Cold War, The Division 2 (patches).

During the download, the space required is pre-allocated... PLUS some extra for some headroom, and miscellaneous installation files.

Once the download and install is complete, the miscellaneous files are deleted.
