Is Veracrypt better than usb drive?

Randel1980

I'm thinking about buying an encrypted usb flash drive from amazon that costs around 50-70$ to store my sensitive info.

Should I go with encrypted usb drive or Veracrypt? Which one is better?  Or can I use Veracrypt on encrypted usb drive for even better protection?

For that price you could get a much larger non-encrypted drive and encrypt it. When you say encrypted USB drive, I assume you mean flash drive, not an external drive using a HDD/SSD. For most people using them, an encrypted flash drive is really meant for data on the go, small amounts of data that you need to have with you or to transfer without compromising security. Personally, that can be accomplished by using something like Protonmail for files less than 25mb. For people who are already security conscious they are mostly a gimmick. One real use I have used them for is working in an environment where credentials used to access systems. An encrypted USB drive can carry biometrics or credentials, which are then used to access said system as a passcode. You can set this up through windows if you want.

If you are not transferring large files, or have a necessity to move data around securely in public I would get a normal flash drive or HDD/SSD and encrypt it using AES 256 bit encryption.

No reason to buy anything for this, veracrypt is free.... and there is no better option. Don't even need a flash drive, you can throw your sensitive info in a veryacrypt "container" and throw it on dropbox or google drive etc, and then have access to it literally anywhere. Or you can use a random flash drive and encrypt it, although I would likely go the cloud storage solution so if your flash drive gets broken, stolen, dies etc, your not SOL.
