Realistically, which GPU do I really need?

Eddo89

I have 2 1080P monitors that I use plus a 4K TV when I want to stream things. I am using a R9 380 that has served me well, but I want more than medium to low settings on just 1080P for modern single player titles.

Now, all I want is simple; ability to play games on my 4K TV at high settings (medium is ok for stupidly demanding games) at 60 FPS, or reasonably high FPS on a 1440P monitor at high settings, when i decide to upgrade my monitor too. I am going to upgrade my CPU too, right now is 1700, might grab a 3600. I am leaning towards 3060 Ti or RX 6800, but perfectly happier to go higher.

I play single player games almost exclusively, so no need to go for extreme FPS. I do have a few things to upgrade (and a house to buy), so what is the suggestion for a GPU that fits my need without blowing the budget too much. Where I am, I can buy any GPU from the retailer, so availability is not a major issue.

Thanks.

Lowest class I'd go is a 3070 or rx6800. However prices are stupid now so just skip it for now and keep using the 380 whilst stuff normalizes. That and getting a card is near impossible.

Availability is fine in my country, can find a 3070 in my country.

Budget is not in USD or Euro and prices be gonna be a little weird trying to convert it and then consider the difference in pricing. There is not a "hard" limit on my budget, maybe not 3090 price. I just want something that is all I need and not waste my money on more GPU than I need anyway. It just means I can throw more money on upgrades elsewhere.

realistically 4k medium to high is 3070/6800xt, with unreal engine supporting dlss i'd go with a 3070, if it plays 2077 or nioh 2 it's prolly good enough imho

Another question, why would you choose 3070 over 6800 XT or vice versa? Is it simply price and how much I care about ray tracing? Or is there anything I should really consider?

In my opinion if your doing 4k gaming I would honestly hold out for a 3080. 3070's are great cards and all , but with newer games coming out  i dont know how great the life span will be for good 4k gamming on the 3070. Already we are seeing games that need every bit of power to hit and maintain 60 fps 4k on a 3070 ( Horizon zero dawn, need for speed heat, metro exodus, and of course cyberpunk. Plus if you do want to dabble with raytracing your going to want bigger card. If your into stretching out your builds life span and getting the best performance over the next 2-3 years and already looking at upgrading a card, i would just bit down and buy the 3080 personally that 10gb of memory will really help out.

My issue is that I also need to bump up the PSU too, and will I realistically get my money's worth with a 3080, considering my CPU aren't amazing yet. When you say those games on 60 FPS 4K, what settings are those in? Like ultra or high or medium?

Most of the gaming is going to be done on 1080p or 1440p monitor. I just want the option to sometimes play on the bean bag, rather than do all my gaming on the 4K.

it's mainly dlss and unreal engine, i don't count amd's verbal promise. Can't go wrong with the 3070 or 3080 if you can get them for retail price.

well not all games support fake 4k dlss, so I'd go with 3080 - - the thing you should avoid is the 3090 as it's really bad value... and personally I wouldn't go amd - - while it's not talked about a lot I already see the 'driver issues' and black screens / freezing popping up again here and there, personally it's not something I would want to deal with, also dlss is indeed a game changer (not much into shadows so I don't really care for ray tracing, although it looks nice, I guess)

you would need a psu upgrade. just talking by numbers here i would prefer the 3080 if you want 1440 or 4k at high graphics. If you dont mind 1080 and 1440 only and maybe turning a few things down occasionally as games get more intense 3070, but if your already shelling out the money i would still go 3080. it will just have longer viability all around. the previously mentioned games were highsettings btw.

Well for me 3070 and 6800 non XT doesnt make Sensei, the price its to close to 6800xt and 3080.. i would rather pick 3080/6800 xt or lower price the 3060ti.

However i had a 3080 and how own a 6800xt for 1080/1440p non Ray tracing the 6800 xt its better, até 4k 3080 os better. But if you dont count Ray tracing they are pretty equals One more fps to 3080 in One game and One more on 6800xt on other. Ray tracing i dont like it... Doesnt Worth at all but if you want it 3080 Will give you better experience but 6800 xt still good anyway id say ar 3070 lvl on Ray tracing
