Not all ISP's is total ****. I get 625mbs up and down and is only promised from 450mbps. I also have to get my own router, because fiber and built in RJ45 gigabit. For reference I pay 36 USD/month. Last month was free because they made an error on my bill. 😀

It seems weird to me how patchy and weird internet service is here in the USA.

Considering we invented the internet and the home pc. It seems more then a little sleazy and shameful to me that things are like that here in the USA. 🥴

I am amazed at how often I hear of how much better the internet service is in many other industrialized countries on the other side of the world.

It would not surprise me at all the find out that modems provided by service providers in those countries were on average better quality.

I hate that some companies provide customers with crappy equipment and I hate that the phone line stuff for inside the customers house seems to me like it is the thinnest most brittle phone wire for inside the home that could be made.

One little thing that bugs me too is that even though I am willing to pay more for it.

I can not even buy thicker or better made inside the house phone line stuff anywhere.

I wish it was a federal law that customers could use any off the shelf equipment that they wanted to and could buy heavier inside the house phone stuff if they wanted too. Just like we buy better quality heavier cables for other things.

It sinks to me that we can't here.😕

I want the US government to run cable everywhere like electric lines.

I'd gladly pay an extra tax of $5.00 from every paycheck to see it done.

I love America but she needs to love me back sometimes lol.

😄

Why IPS's provided modem+wifi routers are bad?

  1. My ISP charges $15 to $25 a month extra for an internet gateway.
  2. They have backdoor access in to that said gateway, meaning they can change settings a stuff, with or without your knowledge.
  3. They tend to have shit WiFi radios. Meaning you will likely have coverage issues. This way they can sell you on some WIFi extenders.
  4. They overheat thru you have stability issues.
  5. They might have features you dont want. Again my provider uses their internet gateways to broadcast a separate but open SSID for public WIFi. Its separate from your network, and bandwidth but you will be providing a free public hotspot while having to pay monthly for the gateway. BULL SHIT.
  6. They lack options. QoS tends to be crap. Port forwarding may or may not work.

So take your pick.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

If I were an ISP and I needed a company to produce 1000 gateway devices for my fiber clients, I’d likely go with a company who would charge me $1/unit than another that would charge me $2/unit. The cost difference is a whopping $1000 between the 2 options, but that manufacturer will tune the device for my network and give me all the bare minimums to deliver fiber connectivity to my clients.

Unfortunately, a lot of ISPs source their modems/gateways from Chinese companies who can mass-produce these devices for cheap. There’s no need to provide advanced features and low-quality materials can be used. Would you put more effort into making something if you’re only getting paid $1 to produce it compared to if you were getting $2 instead?
