I'm looking to start saving up to buy a new computer for gaming so that I can get a super consistent framerate on the games I like to play, but since I've never looked into buying new ones, my grandma usually gets new computers for our house and they're just casual office PCs, I wanted to know if it would be a better idea to buy a prebuilt one that's expensive so that I have all the cool components already or should I buy a cheaper one and then buy components separately so that I can ditch this 5 year old dusty pile of garbage quicker?

No. Build one from scratch. Just get all the components yourself. It's going to be cheaper, better quality components and the biggest it will all be compatible as all those cheap desktops have a bunch of proprietary stuff to prevent you from upgrading.

Alright, where should I start to start building? I've never done any of this before, sorry.

Got a budget? It's as simple as buy the components and stick em together correctly. Which is more than easy enough to do. Plenty of yt tutorials. Just take your time and don't rush it and pay good attention with the psu cable so you don't plug your 6+2pin gpu power cable into the 4+4pin cpu power socket. They technically don't fit into each other but plenty of people have managed to force them in instead of just reading the quite clear labels on them.

But I need a budget first before anything else. However right now is a terrible time to build a system as gpu's are nowhere in stock and if they are are massively overpriced (same story in prebuilts you see them going for hundreds more than before), psu's are more expensive and cpu's are a very mixed bag of availability and price.

Well I've not got much cash right now but I can save it up, I'd say my budget is probably 800$ since that's probably the most I can save up without baby raging. When will the parts be less overpriced? Does that have something to do with COVID?

right now that budget is pretty low. after gpu prices drop that is decent budget. Depends what you do with the pc of course.

Anyway I think that there are muss less shortage at the summer or after it. But nobody really knows.

If you really need a pc now just buy a used dell optiplex with i7 2600 or i7 3770 or i7 4770 and buy gtx 1650 and ssd and plug them into the optiplex.

I Use my knowledge as business owner and self taught technician aswell as an AI to help people. AI might be controversial but it actually works pretty well 90% of the time.

It does have to do with covid but not entirely due to a lowered production. It's more due to people having more time now and wanting more tech. However scalpers figured that out and use bots to instantly buy the cards and cpu's and sell them at a profit later.

800$ is a nice budget and if you are willing to you can still score some good prices on used cards that will last you a couple years and upgrade in the future. What country are you located in so I can make a build in the correct region?

You can buy everything but the gpu new and have a good starting point only needing to upgrade the gpu later if so pleased. 800$ is enough to get a decent intel gaming system as their prices did remain somewhat stable.

yeah i guess. I mean you could go intel without a gpu but performance will not be the best really.

I doubt I'll really need a strong GPU since the games I want to play and the other things I want to do don't require it. I like indie games (especially the ones with pixelart style like terraria and starbound) so I've never needed much GPU juice.

Oh thank you! I was already looking into getting a 1050 Ti, it looks great for what I want to do and its price, is there anything else I should know?

not really no. Also do do not pay over 100$ for 1050ti.

for indie games literally any gpu better than gtx 950 (950,1050 and 1050ti will do, also rx 560 if found under 100$)

This is if going amd

For intel it would just be a motherboard, memory and cpu swap like this:

The amd system is a tad bit better and does allow for a more flexible upgrade route.

Gpu wise a used one should be the best option

Not really. Just that for a used gpu under 120$ these are your options normally listed from best to worst (and cheapest normally). All can still play any modern game at 1080p 60fps:

Rx580/Rx480/Gtx1060 6gb/Gtx 980/R9 290x

Rx570/Rx470/R9 290

Gtx1060 3gb

Gtx970/R9 285/Gtx 1050ti

This system would be the better choice as the one listed by SavageNeo has very limited upgrade potential, will simply put at most last 3 years no matter what as the new consoles have double the cores and threads as that system and it won't be enough soon after the ps4/xbox one stop being relevant and it's rather expensive.

That and a 1050ti is already the lowest you should go for games today
